HP ProLiant MicroServer

Please do bug him for info. :D:D

This is exactly the configuration that I had planned - when I acquired mine, alas my n36l is hidden away at the moment.

Seen as you have already configured it , maybe I should bug you for some help - in about 2 weeks time, when I get around to configuring mine again.

Awesome setup yeti!
<3 my little HP Microserver :)

Big ups to PP for organising and delivering this bad boy.

For those that might be interested, I also bought 2x 4GB Corsair value RAM and a Sapphire HD5450. I have VMware ESXi running on an 8GB low profile USB drive connected to the internal USB port. I have a 320gb 2.5" 7200rpm laptop HDD mounted under the ODD which currently has two partitions, one for each guest VM's OS. I have 3 x 3.5" 2TB HDDs each with a single .vmdk partition.

I am currently running two virtual machines, one running FreeNAS 8 and the other running Ubuntu Server 11.04. The FreeNAS VM has all the 2TB's formatted as ZFS and provides both Windows shares and *nix mount points to my home network. The Ubuntu Server VM is currently running SABnzbd+, sickbeard and couchpotato behind a LAMP configuration.

I have wired an eSATA->SATAp (SATA + power) back into the Microserver, but currently I have been unable to get a drive to power up using this cable. I have updated to the latest available BIOS on the HP site.
I will be setting up XBMC this week on the Ubuntu Server VM.
I also found that I needed a MOLEX->2x SATA power for the 2.5" and the SATA cable needed to be a right angled connector so it would fit underneath the drive bays.

Good, clean fun.
Thanks PP :)
I sense a blog post with your configuration would be most appreciated by all ;) The eSATA port on the HP microserver is unpowered do you add power into it somewhere from usb perhaps?

I think that's why he tried the SATA+power cable, which failed.

So it seems the eSATA port is for conecting to external 3.5" AC-powered HDDs.

My Proliant runs Debian with 4x 2TB hdd's in a ZFS config. The OS then sits on a HDD (500GB) which is currently in an external esata cradle (thinking of moving this to the ODD bay but need brackets, how did you all solve this?).

Are any of you guys using ZFS, what kind of redundancy do you have?

Also using this as a NAS server / host for shared XBMC DB.

Thanks
J

There are 1 x or 2 x 3.5" HDD in 1 x 5.25" bay adapters.

Or if you use a 2.5" HDD there are 2 x 2.5" HDD in 1 x 3.5" bay adapters.

Thanks Postman,

Where can I find the adapters? I've looked at the usual suspects and haven't found any - was almost going to make my own.

Frontosa has these, and a few more I think:

Lian-li MF-515 , Black - 3.5" to 5.25" mounting bracket + front panel - for front access 3.5" device
Lian-li EX-H32 , Black - for 2x 2.5" SATA hdd/SDD in 1x3.5" bay , hot swappable ( 2x hdd together ) , support raid in 1X3.5" bay - ideal for raid in limited space , with lockable meshed front door , with anti-vibration kit - compatible with most of case

PM me if you need something.

So... I got another microserver - couldn't pass up on an awesome deal through my company (R599) ;)

Gonna set up windows home server 2011 on it and see what it can do...

I now own 4x of these beauties! :D

Well if your the Ryder from Jawug that I know then I could imagine you have 4, but find myself wondering why you only have 4 and not more, haha. Maybe you still remember me, Slick also from Jawug.

I got 10 yesterday :P and am very impressed. But now I feel ripped off seeing that some guys paid 599 via their companies where I paid a slight bit more than that :[[

Agreed,

@Yeti, please will you be so kind and provide a detailed blog post for configuring your current setup.

Oh well, one is more than I need right about now - will horde some more, once the HP N36L must have toy for the tech gadget phreaks phase has died down - seen as they are being snapped up at an alarming rate.

The OC.net N36L thread is in excess of 100 pages, not counting the other owner threads on hexus.net, avforums, hardforum and a few others.

So yeah, HP has made the little must have gadget for 2011 for the gadget and tech lovers.

Also picked up a bit of info - on a few other blogs : http://www.techhead.co.uk/running-vmware-vsphere-on-an-hp-microserver

Hey Slick, this is the Ryder you know ;-)

A couple of these babies will be wugged shortly at a couple of strategic locations!

Awesome, what they going to do on wug though, cache or perhaps game servers? hehe

Bought two of these on Saturday, looking to get another 4 or so. Myself and a colleague will be doing similar builds.
I agree that it would be great if everybody shares their feedback on here.

Has anybody found a 6450 that fits in the case yet?

This is what I'm aiming for -

Hardware:
I'm getting either a 6450 or 5450 today, will be setting it up tonight (or trying to).
The PC will be utilized as a HTPC, NAS and occasional browser.
My HDD setup will be 4 x Samsung F4 2TBs, and I'm still considering a small laptop drive to maybe use as OS drive.
Got an awesome deal on a HTC Flyer last week, so will be using that as a remote control if I can.

Software:
I'll be going for a install of Ubuntu (first time Linux user though) together with XBMC.
Can I somehow tell Ubuntu to boot directly into XBMC - or how long does Ubuntu take to load? I rather want it this way over XBMC live just to have the added utility of an OS.

Secondly - is it possible to use something like symbolic links in Ubuntu?
(Or how do you guys deal with movies, series etc on different HDDs, changing HDDs etc?) - XBMC will forget what I watched if I don't use these..

If our builds are successful I'll try and post our full setup as a guide on here as well.

You can set ubuntu to automatically log on your user on boot, and then add xbmc to the list of startup programs. Alternatively you could even use xbmc as your "shell" and then it wont load the rest of the IDE but by rather doing it the other way you can always exit xbmc and use it as a pc.

Yes you can use symbolic links. It's also possible to update the xbmc database directly if you do have to change paths to something. There's a plugin called "trakt" that seems to basically sync your watched list with a website but I haven't tried this yet.

Hi guys,

I will be compiling a guide on the setup I mentioned in my previous post. This guide will include

- Setting up the HP MicroServer with various hardware accessories
- Installing ESXi onto the internal USB drive
- Installing vSphere client on your Desktop PC and adding and configuring VMs
- Installing FreeNAS and creating network accessible shares.
- Installing Ubuntu Server with SABnzbd+, sickbeard and couchpotato.

All of these will make use of the vast resources available on the web, some that I used, and others that are useful.
Unfortunately I do not have a lot of spare time, so expect it in the next few weeks.
