HP ProLiant MicroServer

Will normal pc memory work on these devices or do you need to install server memory?

...using flashed BIOS to enable all SATA ports.
Thanks for the tip, I'm going to be setting my MicroServer up soon.

Here's a link to a site with the patched BIOS that enables AHCI on all six SATA ports:
http://www.livingonthecloud.net/2011/08/hp-microserver-sata-firmware-upgrade.html
The BIOS from this page is version O41 dated 2011/01/17 but does contain the AHCI patch.

[-]Do you perhaps have a link to the original site where the patch was released?[/-]

THANKS!!
I'll try this over the course of the week and report back.
Looks like a lot of work, but definitely worth it if it works.

Exactly what i was thinking. But if it works then its much better to go for an ATI card.

With respect to the NIC hanging on large file copies, I can confirm that ESXi 5.0 introduces a new NIC driver for the HP MS such that this bug is no longer present. It was, however, present on ESXi 4.1 Update 1.

Just to confirm, if i use Unraid, all my drives will show as one big drive?

Does the Microserver come without SATA connectors for the optical drive? Just wondering, because mine did not but the instructions seemed to imply that it did.

Luckily I had some spares though so wasn't a problem.

Looks like a lot of work, but definitely worth it if it works.

The instructions have some errors, namely:

1. ./configure --enabled-vaapi changes to ./configure --enable-vaapi
2. The above will fail unless you have libva1-x11 installed

Other than that xbmc compiled and vainfo looked good, but I still got segmentation faults (xbmc crashes) when trying to play a video. When I disable VAAPI support in xbmc settings then the video plays, but it's jerky. Enable VAAPI and boom! xmbc crashes. The GPU in question is a radeon HD4350.

So basically, for me at least, the quest continues.

Yes

If you *want*, you could look at the individual disks. And even copy files to specific disks (try that with RAID-5!).

The link greg_SA pointed to describes how unRAID works, but you don't have to worry about it. It's just one big drive.

Things like the split-level helps you to fine-tune the performance but, again, it's still one big drive.

which GFX card do I get thats cheap and will also fit the HP MS, that would be able to play 1080p and run XBMC smoothly?

Also can I run XBMC on the HP MS without an OS? I saw this "XBMC Live" thing on the XBMC Website?

XBMC in Windows/Windows/Linux = ATI HD5450 or HD6450 due to its lower power usage.

XBMC Live = Nvidia GT210 or GT220, no ATI due to a problem with drivers for where 720p is the max one can play.

The card must have a low profile, single slot bracket.

Im not sure whether i'll be adding an OS to it or running XBMC Live yet.....does that mean I should go for the GT210/220 then?

I wish I could use an ATi though :(

The PoV, as long as it comes with the right bracket.

Personally I'd go for a silent card, those small fans can be quite loud and are a pain to clean...

I would love a silent card....but won't it get a little hot in that cramped case?
