HP ProLiant MicroServer

i got the samba working - all i did was type in the ip in explorer and BAM!
(i've created a shortcut to the NAS now)

It copies to the NAS @ 10MB/s...is that good? (Gigabit network, no switches just a cable)




i'll look into hibernating soon, but i wanna know about tweaks to the post you guys have made? the post takes the longest BY FAR.


I just wanna say thanx to everyone in this tread, this HP RULES!
 
10MB/s is rather poor for Samba, if both PC's has 1Gbps network cards.
I'm getting anything between 17-37MB/s from my NTFS partition with Samba with my Intel Atom CPU.

Have a look at your server's CPU usage when you copy stuff via Samba. I hope you didn't make your data partition NTFS like I did, because then NTFS-3G will use a lot of CPU and slow the downloads by a big margin :(

I partitioned the free 250GB drive in my PC, to a 125GB (for OpenElec) and a 125GB (for windows 7) - I didnt format the drives though, kept it in RAW.

When OpenElec installed, I chose the 250GB drive, but could NOT choose a partition


...so im not sure if it repartitioned the whole drive back into 1 single partition?
does OpenElec do that? what file system do I have now?




(I dont think i need the dual boot with windows 7 anymore though, samba is SUPER EASY...something I did not know at the time)
Maybe I should repartition?
 
You had to format the partitions as either a Windows (FAT16/FAT32/NTFS) or Linux (Ext2/Ext3/Ext4) partition, because you can't have files or an operating system on a RAW (unformatted) partition.

You can repartition/resize partitions with a Live disc like Parted Magic or EASEUS Partition Manager.
 
So finally managed to get my gt520, installed it and openelec running problem free. I neglected to grab myself a remote, need to do that still, fortunately downloaded xbmc remote for iphone and it worked like a charm :).

I know you cant have files on raw, but surely openelec formatted it for me?

Ill plug it into my pc today and see whats going on
 
how would i go about getting the iphone to work as a remote? I guess I need to buy and install a wifi card into the HP?

If they're on the same LAN (iphone via WiFi and HP via cable)then you just install the XBMC remote app and point it at the HP's IP address!

I'm pretty sure Openelec would've reformatted the 250GB to 1 single partition. For the way you wanted it to work have a look here except you'd want to install win 7 before openelec and then update grub

@keeper, pretty much what ^ said. Download the app, do the setup and it runs, like a charm, loving it.

To operate the server or a specific app?

If you have an Android phone (although I'm sure it's available for other platforms) look at Unified Remote ... the official XBMC remote also works pretty well but only controls XBMC.

Cheaper than that I can't help :)

I already ordered it, it's arriving tomorrow morning - I'll tell you how it performs once i get it, if you can wait.
it was recommended by another forumite in this thread...apparently it works with xbmc out of the box.


I'm gonna get a logitech harmony though, saw a beautiful one at matrix warehouse for like R270 - but it needs a receiver - so hopefully it will marry the one im getting

PS: im looking to put the receiver INSIDE the HP Server - are their usb headers on the mobo, and does a header-to-usb- cable exist?
(otherwise im gonna have a wire from the back going back into the chassis)

They didn't have stock of that remote so i got some other chinese make....the remote i got is TINY!

it works though =)

I just basically need the receiver for the Logitech Remote though...



I saw the manual and I "supposedly" had to connect:
-USB Port (cable 1)
-usb header (cable 2)
-two loose wires into the PSU cables for power :erm::eek:

I said no thanx to that and only connected the usb.....and it works.



I would like to use an internal usb header but do you REALLY need to give it power too? I thought the USB Headers would provide power by themselves?

Maybe I should buy a new USB Header-to-USB port cable? will that work?

Thanks for the mention on myBB :)

That additional power supply connection is attached to the purple +5V standby lead (always live) so that there is power on the IR receiver at all times - this lets the IR receiver turn on the PC from a complete shutdown state, when AFAIK - the power from the USB ports is normally turned off. If you're not going to want this functionality, then you shouldn't need to connect anything more than the UBS header :)

Hope that clears up your questions?
