HP ProLiant MicroServer

@timvdwest Just installed it... fits perfectly, about 5mm clearance between the heatsink and the tray rail. I wanted to take a photo, but you can barely make out anything on the photo. But it fits!

Thanks!

Wiki will be up a bit later, internet too slow at my office, will upload the files at home.

Does any know where I can either
- find a bracket that converts it to a 3.5" drive with the connectors aligned up properly
OR
- explain where the SATA is for the optical drive (does it come with a SATA cable or do you need to plug in your own? and where is the connector on the mb then?)
Right now, I plugged in the SSD in the cage by just the tension of the connectors, its not supported by anything else.

You will need your own SATA cable; the SATA port on the motherboard is right next to the USB port, just under the drive cage. Although not necessary, a right angled SATA cable is more appropriate for this space.

Okay, busy setting up my microserver, eveything smooth so far. Upped the memory to 2gb which should be fine for its purpose and currently running a Point of View G210. Using the stock drive as I'm not using it for storage. Running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Also managed to get the wiki files up. Its still not completely finished, but please feel free to start adding content if you can (if anybody wants to get the structure done that would be awesome), the only settings that I need to configure are minor. You can get it here: www.myhtpc.co.za/wiki

Cheers!

Cool! You may already notice I've been busy on a graphics cards page!

Let me know what you think

Hi folks - new to this concept and I don't have time to read through all 87 preceding pages so I hope someone doesn't mind answering a quick bunch of questions on this?
I have been using an old laptop to run downloads on nightly for some time but I fear the machine is about to expire.
Would one of these work OK to do the same job - OUT THE BOX? I would want to connect it to my network via ethernet.
I've seen on the hardware bargains thread that folks are buying them for around R1500 which sounds like a reasonable enough price tag - better than another laptop - but I don't want to HAVE to add a bunch of stuff immediately just to get it to work (apart from a keyboard mouse and screen obviously!).
Incidentally I am comparing the price to that of a laptop only because if the thing is going to run all night I would prefer something low on power which desktop PCs obviously aren't!
Thanks.

They only thing you will have to do is maybe put in a few HDD's for extra storage as it only has a 250GB and you would have to install an OS..

FreeNAS with SB & sab and you have an awesome download box that can run without a screen, you control it over the network from a web browser.. There are some good guides that provide all the necessary steps..

As per above posts, a wiki is being setup with more info, it will also be much easier to navigate and find relevant info.

Also gave hpshop a bash - lets see what transpires!
Ian

Not bad - was delivered yesterday - so <3 days to process and deliver. And I can confirm the price of R1274 incl delivery. Interestingly the website still reflects the order as not shipped:)

Now to set it up....

Thanks mh348.
I do have a few external drives which I am currently using for storage so FOR NOW I'm ok with that side of things. And I do have an unused version of XP lying around which I could use as an OS unless you'd recommend loading this FreeNAS instead..

dont use XP... it doesnt support GPU usage natively for playing movies in XBMC. I suggest you get yourself openelec or win7

If you read divv's original dinges, you will see it's only needed for downloads right now.

WIKI: Anyone else getting an Internal 500 Server Error? Sigh WebAfria...

stroebs is correct but I appreciate the input anyway techead! :-)
Haha techead is correct in any case. XP is a defunct OS for new hardware like this. Can't squeeze all the juicy goodness out of it with XP anymore.

i've come to a cross-road here. I think windows 7 is too bloated and slow to be running XBMC. Im starting to think that openelec is the route to go. I have little linux knowledge, so going the full blow linux route seems too risky for me...

my only concern is that open elec is still so green (new) and I imagine getting SABNZB and sickbeard working is gonna be a mission....

and then on top of this I got the whole remote saga (dont buy a Logitech harmony 300)

Haha my bad, I remember seeing the Afrihost page now. Mistook it for Webafrica somehow. Probably because they both have Africa in the name.

Thanks for everybody's input so far on the wiki, starting to come together!

I will contribute some stuff once I have finished configuring my own microserver :)

Yep, I know XP's over the hill.. The ONLY advantage of it is that I have a licenced copy available!!
(Maybe I should learn how to use FreeNAS as suggested by mh348!)

I'm sure if you Google around a little you'll find tons of info on FreeNAS.

As for the Wiki, I plan to do several tutorials on it, installing several operating systems and writing some tuts. I'm finished with varsity for the year so I have plenty of time :p
