Heh heh heh I've been fairly busy on it. Will continue adding and updating pages tomorrow.

Agreed, you are doing a great job there stroebs.

Is a NAS section going to be added? I think that will be a valuable resource too.

Well I jumped in today and have gone from "never heard of a HP microserver" yesterday to "own one" today. Now I need to somehow get OS onto it (no optical). Doesn't help either that it turns out that XP version I had handy was for "tablets".
Ah the joys of being your own IT expert (when you really aren't an expert - just braver than you should be)!!
I'll venture over to the wiki and see if I get something there!

In other news, it seems the little HP can support a maximum of 16TB of storage space.

Someone has put a 8-port SAS controller card into the MS and then put a bay with 4 x 2.5" HDDs into the 5.25" bay.
This means:
4 x 1TB 2.5" HDDs
4 x 3TB 3.5" HDDs

For a total of a whopping 16TB internal space!
Correction 19tb : Statts over at OC au

Done that - so far all the options I tried have failed.. :-(

If you want to install a linux OS, download the tool called Unetbootin - it works great. If you want Windows then you'll have to ask somebody else, not too clued up on Windows USB installs.

What will it primarily be used for?

Thought my post was forgotten ... setting up tonight. Going with WHS2011 but will only be trailing it this weekend.
I need to be able to run Squeezeserver, for my Squeezebox boom.
Primary use will be data storage, music! and sabnzb... obviously I'll want sickbeard too, and maybe a good streaming program for easy streaming to other PC's

Hope someone can help me. I have a 32GB 2.5" Corsair SSD that I'd like to use, but when I screw it into the drive bracket, the connectors don't line up with the drive cage. The SSD came with a bracket that adapts it to 3.5", but you can cleary see its not going to work either because the connectors still don't line up. I suspect the bracket the SSD came with is simply to enable you to mount in a 3.5" bay and connect a SATA cable.

Does any know where I can either
- find a bracket that converts it to a 3.5" drive with the connectors aligned up properly
OR
- explain where the SATA is for the optical drive (does it come with a SATA cable or do you need to plug in your own? and where is the connector on the mb then?)
Right now, I plugged in the SSD in the cage by just the tension of the connectors, its not supported by anything else.

There is no SATA cable supplied for the optical drive. I also had a small SSD lying around which I inserted in the space between the hard drive cage and the optical bay. I used the SATA port intended for the optical drive. I am still planning on just drilling some holes under the optical drive to attach the SSD. But currently all the power connectors is keeping it nicely in place.

Can someone please suggest which remote I should go for ? I'll probably buy another harmony remote, but first I need to a cheap remote that is compatible with Openelec. Then I'll just use the IR receiver with the Harmony remote.

Hi All, just a quick question reagarding this sever. I have just received one but am unsure how I should treat my current HDD storage.

I currently have a 3 HDDs in my desktop where I store my media (1.5TB, 1TB and a 2TB).

Can I just unplug and install into the microserver or will it cause problems with the RAID configuration in the new machine and/or the fact that the HDDs are different sizes. The last thing I want to do is lose my media... Thanks.

If you are not planning to run RAID on the server, yes just transfer the drives. I did the same thing (too lazy to setup raid).

So after running an "upgrade" on my ubuntu hpms it's farked and I'm all out of google-fu.
Think maybe I must just switch to openelec as I've never used anything except xbmc, some samba sharing and tried twonkyserver but that's expired and I don't really need it.

If you're coming from windows and are going to use a linux distro be aware that NTFS performance won't be fantastic in linux.
The NTFS-3G driver works but hasn't been optimized for speed. It won't affect watching media at all but the speed of copying maybe limited to around 10MB/s (80Mb/s).

Nothing more than a warning though!

On another note, the wiki is coming along nicely! :) Sorry I haven't helped yet, was away this weekend!

If you'd like to redirect www.myhtpc.co.za to the wiki just delete the afrihost index.html and create an index.php file with the following in it!
