HP ProLiant MicroServer

This is what I need. I'm currently running openelec while I wait for eden.

Do you think there's an advanatage running WHS + XBMC over Ubuntu + XBMC?

Is there a sleep mode or a lowe(er) power mode that WHS goes into when not in use? Will it power down the usb ports? I have two externals plugged in that are now always on as the microserver is always on - hence the question. Also will accessing the microserver over the network automatically wake it up from sleep?

I want to go with XBMCbuntu and then setup an automated downloader (http as I use downstorm). I also want to be able to pass dowloads to the machine via a web interface. Maybe later look into nzb. Will linux be able to do this? I'm trying not to go with WHS since its propietary and if windows is anything to go by, resource hungry. Also the new XBMCbuntu seems purpose built for what i'm trying to do.

All my other machines are Win7. I would also want to do automatic backups of personal files to the server.

At first I thought there were advantages to running WHS. Now I dont think there is. I bought it though so I will carry on using it. Everything I mentioned can be done with Linux. I use some software that only runs on Windows but I am sure you can find Linux equivalents, like getting data of "unreadable disks" etc.

At first I liked the remote web stuff built into WHS but now I hardly even use it as I have everything else setup. Remote desktop is a must for me but again I am sure there is something similar in Linux.

I mainly manage by "home" server from work. All the apps: sickbeard, uTorrent, sab, xbmc, couchpotato have web interfaces. Yesterday, I scheduled a file to download from my tab in CT on my server in DBN. Really convenient. I have a downloader but very rarely use it as I mostly get stuff via news servers and occasionally via torrent.

I also have 3 externals plugged in and I use Super Flexible File Synchroniser to make sure the externals mirror the hard disks. In this way I know that I will probably not lose anything. Unfortunately the externals are always "on" but two of them automatically go into "sleep" when not being used and wake up when needed.

The MS handles everything just fine, even the cams and the recording and stuff. Awesome piece of kit.

I have one of these

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/5957...rd_Adapter_for_Laptops_Netbooks_Desktops.html

Not from this supplier though, mine was from "Dailydeals"

Works well, but obscures a second usb port, I use an extension cable to overcome this

Thanks. I'm hoping that the USB sound card automatically pulls the audio feed (i.e. mutes the hdmi) when headphones are plugged in. I don't want to go to settings (xbmc) and change the audio output each time.

I think I'll get one today. Hopefully esquire has an el cheapo one, I'll be stopping there for a hard drive. I need a better credit record anyway :D

Is there a tutorial somewhere describing how to integrate all those apps?

Actually, it isnt that difficult. I did without much irritation. I dont know of a detailed tutorial but can try and help you if you like.

Let me know what setup you currently have and I can try and give you pointers.

I found this:

http://code.google.com/p/sickbeard/wiki/PostProcessing

but there probably is more detailed tuts somewhere online.

My hardware is exactly the same as you except I have a GT520 graphics card.

I think I will go for Windows Home Server 2011 as I want a quick and easy install.

Which is the best place to buy this from?

I agree with everyone: biosonline. I got it from our supplier but biosonline is probably best.

Cool. I'm going to then run XBMCbuntu, as soon as there's a working beta.

Although I went looking for a 'trial' version of WHS, when I saw this guide using event ghost.

I had a look at the guide. I do all of that without Event Ghost? Also, the movies automatically get added to the movie folder and added to XBMC.

Just need XBMC, CouchPotato, SickBeard and SAB. - all free, all awesome...

This however is the nzb way of doing things.

Also, by the way for anyone interested. Astraweb have a prepaid 1000GB account for $50. I previously used to pay $25 for 180GB.

is there a guide to achieve that integration?

I responded to your previous above. You may have missed it...

I have not come across a formal guide but can tell you how to do it if you like.

I found this: http://code.google.com/p/sickbeard/wiki/PostProcessing

but it isnt very detailed.

How far a long are you?

Do you have SAB installed and downloading stuff manually?
Do you have Sickbeard installed at the moment?

I am sure I can help you through it. Perhaps pm me if you need help?

I have both installed but not talking! I just got some stuff. I will PM you if I get stuck. Thanx

I tried out the Beta 3 of XBMCbuntu, but struggled with the sound via HDMI. Does anybody know what the settings are without me having to go in to the command line as my hptc has no keyboard and XBMCbuntu has ssh apparently disabled by default.

I am running a Gigabyte Nvidia G210 - I can get the audio to work for music and vidoes, but can't get navigation sounds working and live streams also are flaky. Any help would be appreciated, would like to move over when it is released.

Got my MS setup and works perfectly, running Win 7 with XBMC and android phone as a remote for now and a Nvidia 210 gfx card. Only one niggle that I need help cleared up is when I play a 16gb 1080p movie it stutters a lot, is this purely that the MS cant handle it or is it the gfx card that doesn't have enough oomve to drive that kind of content?

Bloody hell, this is turning into an expensive exercise. :-( After battling with updates, connecting to WHS 2011, corrupted NET frameworks issues etc I decided to go legal on my pc and buy Windows Home Premium. Quite a novel feeling to activate. :-)

Then after two days of struggling to get gigabit LAN working properly and buying a new lan card, I find out my newish Netgear DGN2200 modem/router doesn't support gigabit! So bought a DLink switch this morning.

Everything up and working now at last, happily copying 1Tb over to the MS atm.

I'm not sure about XBMCbuntu, but this fix worked for me in OpenElec. Give it a go.

system> settings> system> audio output> output device>hdmi?

Yep, have set it up like this but get no navigation sounds. On my current setup I had to create a asound.conf file to get it working but was hoping they would have this stuff working out the box seeing though this gpu is very popular for media centres these days. Oh well, will just copy over the file when I move over to Eden.

Come to think of it. I don't have navigation sounds either. Didn't want it. Not sure if its disabled though.

I've built an Ubuntu + XBMC image that should be able to be restored onto any 8gb flashdisk and will boot and run XBMC off the bat, all drivers for nvidia included, HDMI Audio out fixed, video optimized, and video tearing fixed.

I'm busy compressing it ( Should come down to ~1gb ), and will upload it somewhere tomorrow morning.

Anyone interested in helping me out by pointing out some bugs and such, I'd appreciate a PM.

( This should also work on a PC running an Nvidia graphics card )

hmmm, weird problem.

I use XBMC to watch stuff off of the MS via another main NAS.

I have the network locations mapped and was added in XBMC.

now since yesterday, XBMC doesn't see those locations anymore.

you can see them straight from Windows, but go into XBMC and it doesn't.

I am now adding it 'straight' as network locations in XBMC and will see how it performs now.
