HP ProLiant MicroServer

Thanks. OK, I see the difference between N36L and N40L from the link.

I have gone back and tried it a few times.
If I were not open minded, that would not have happened. :)
I am looking for what you guys see in it. Each time I wonder why you don't use plex.
Trust me, I don't walk around with blinkers on and am not loyal to any brand. I like to use what I think is best for the task at hand.
IMO, Plex has a lot over XBMC.

There has to be a reason why Samsung and LG are licensing Plex - and not XBMC - for their newer model TVs.

The only thing I can see that XBMC has over Plex is its appliance like setups. The Linux version is in testing though, so that will not be an issue soon.

Just posted on another thread but for me XBMC is awsome for a single home theater solution and Plex is great for multi room / mobile device media sharing. I wont give up my main XBMC center but I do use Plex now for mobile / secondary HT stations. So at the moment I run both. Would prefer if XBMC had a "client" as I prefer its interface to Plex.

Once you setup your media sources and scrape from either local nfos or the web, I am sure you will find it very different. Also, that really annoys me about Plex: does not scrape from local nfo's. There are some workarounds but none of them seem to work very well.

Guys I'm struggling to setup nfs/network shares to work on my openelec box.
upnp works well but the box with the media is accessed via lan and I cannot get it to connect even after disabling password protected sharing.

Please help.

Have you tried smb shares?

Smb://server/share

Don't use openelec but that should work

HI. Not sure if this has been covered , but how do you get your N40L to power on/off with the remote ? As in suspend mode ?
f you use it for media player only do you u jus switch of and hard boot it again. I kinda miss this feature now. Thanks

ok just recieved my remote from biosonline
very impressed with their service

ordered and paid with eft on Friday
Goods dispatched on Monday
And delivered 15 mins ago (Tues)

Now to get home and see if this reciever will work with the harmony remote!

Got the HP Proliant Server. Gigabyte GT520 has been dispatched via Speed Services and just when you need Speed Services Tracker to work it doesn't :/ Already installed XBMCbuntu on the 250 GB hard drive. Need to figure out NAS, as well as installing SABNZBplus :)

How do you copy from windows pc to htpc with openelec?
It takes forever using samba shares.
Something that takes 40 mins from external hardrive to pc take 6 to 7 hours from pc to htpc.
If I have alot to copy I take my hardrive out of the htpc put it in an external casing and copy.
Surely there is a better way

fred1 does samba sharing happen out of the box with openELEC - how do you configure?

Yeah it comes with openelec and windows out of the box.
I used milkmans guide to setup the hardrives to pickup as a network drive but samba does pick it up on default settings.

What do you guys think of these..

and
http://store.antec.com/Product/accessory-veris_media/veris-premier/0-761345-30126-8.aspx

Matrix Warehouse can get them for me at R899 and R1,099 respectively... While the premier looks awesome, the HP MS won't take it without a bit of front door hacking.
The Elite still looks slick though and I think complete the look when using as a media player.

On the flip side... Last night I did a system image of my Win7 Ultimate and Plex setup. I then re-installed XBMCUbuntu. I just HAVE to try figure out what the XMBC guys see over Plex.
Took a bit of a fiddle and I got 5.1 output over HDMI. So sound working.

My Harmony 600 does not do much at the mo except change volume. I assume this is because the key bindings for XBMC are different to Plex so will have to reconfigure it. Will do that today or tomorrow.

I downloaded some other themes and the overall look is definitely improved. What I am missing it a Video / Movies / Unwatched menu option. I don't want to browse all my media - just straight to Unwatched. Same for TV Shows. Any idea how to get this sorted?

And now the clincher that is making me NOT use this setup.
Buffering. OMG! 720p movies buffer every few minutes. 1080p movies buffer every minute. It is terrible.
This is the same box on the same network that was running 100% using Windows and Plex. I also have a WD TV Live hooked up to the same switch and it does right up to 1080p without a sign of buffering.
Selecting a 720p or 1080p movie also takes a while to get going. Very irritating.
Initially I hooked up to my collection via a windows share. I figured that perhaps it was this causing the problem as windows was perhaps giving issues with the share. So I changed it to rather hook up to my Mezzmo server (same as WD TV Live does). No change.
So right now, I am sitting in the lounge coding, and watching stuff on the WD TV Live. XBMC does not want to behave.

Any tips and/or tricks to get smooth playback?

Running a stock setup HP MS with 2GB RAM and 250GB HDD. Added in a GT210 for video. Sending sound via the HDMI.

Those receivers are awesome...

There is an option in XBMC. move your mouse to the left or press the left key on your remote. there is an option that says "hide watched". Also recently added episodes / movies is quite useful. I use that all the time.

Very strange, I have a very similar box and I run my 45GB copy of Transformers without breaking a sweat. I have 8GB RAM and an HD6450 card though but that shouldnt make much of a difference. I take it your data is not on your XBMC box?

Thanks for the menu item tips Iceman. Will configure that shortly. Recently added and unwatched are key IMO.

No, my storage is on another HP MS.
My setup...

  • HP MS upstairs in my home theater room. Running Windows 7 Ultimate, Plex Media Center, Plex Media Server and Mezzmo. Mezzmo used to serve DLNA clients around the house and PMS for Plex clients around the house.
Also shared my media folders using standard windows sharing.
  • HP MS downstairs in the lounge. This was running Windows 7 Ultimate and Plex Media Center but change to XBMCUbuntu last night. I get access to the media on the upstairs HP MC via the SAMBA (think it is called that). I have also tried using the DLNA access and hooking up to Mezzmo. Buffer issues on both methods of access.
  • WDTV Live also downstairs in the lounge. This was here before the HP MC moved in. Still hooked up though.
Hooked up to the same switch as the HP MS. Zero buffer issues and streams right up to 1080p with no probs.
  • Whole house is gigabit ethernet so more than fast enough.

I have 2 * 4GB on the way from Esquire. Going to put that in my upstairs HP MS, and move the 2GB currently in it to my downstairs HP MC to up it to 2 * 2GB.
I don't see how the RAM could affect it though as Win7/Plex ran 100%.

Could it perhaps be related to Ubuntu ethernet drivers or something? It is definitely not hardware related so must be something to do with XBMCUbuntu. Dunno what though. Green with linux and XBMC.

That looks awesome! I like the look of the premier. Let us know how it fits if you get it.

I have sat here analysing McGuyver ways of getting it to fit and cannot see a way. The door will need be cut which I don't want to do. Think I will play safe and go with the Elite :)

I have a feeling the post above from fred1 and slow samba sharing could be related to my buffering issue?
I have tried DLNA too though and still buffering.

I am determined to get this XBMC up and running 100%. I want to actively use it as my primary setup in the lounge so can compare to Plex better. Only bugger is from creating a USB install key for Win7 right through to sitting and watching my FHD movies on the Plex Media Center I only need about 2 hours. That includes updating nVidia drivers, configuring remote etc... It kinda sux that the XBMCUbuntu setup requires to much config to be able to just watch a movie. I hope the end result justifies the effort :)

To copy without using samba you could log onto the box using Winscp and copy that way. If its still slow then you know the problem s not with samba.

To log into an openelec server you just use 'openelec' as the host name. Then log on with the user being 'root' and the password 'openelec'

Ok, will give it a go.
Think my problem is the slow wireless (using a duoplus).
Was going to try connecting htpc to laptop with cat5 cable and see if its faster.
