HP ProLiant MicroServer

Hi All
Just wanted to give you some bad news , we were informed yesterday that the HP Proliant MicroServer has gone up by a whopping 30%, with our cost now being R1399 excl for a quantity of 100 + units I honestly do not know how they got to that price as the Rand /Dollar only went up by 13% since March this year, we managed to get 100 units last week and this week we now have to pay that crazy price, we have adjusted our selling price to R1399.00 excl as we now using the average cost between the “Old Stock” and “New” Stock that is arriving next week-Trust me this is not a sales pitch.

Still not bad. I was actually expecting the price to go up more than that.
Even at your new price, these machines are a freaking steal.

Removed the gfx card and now it boots up again. So the MSI N520GT MD2GD3 is not compatible I guess...

Just bought the N40L and started reading up on cards. After reading the above response I`m now weary of just buying any card.
I want it for the same reason as everyone else (Audio over HDMI and max performance for LP card)

So I have looked at Gigabyte GV-N610D3-1GI and all they give in the specs is a 300W powersupply requirement (not the cards actual power consumption) and msi N520GT-MD1GD3/LP (Can`t find stock, I can only find N520GT MD2GD3/LP) doesn`t give anything.

Is there a decent website where one can look at actual power consumption ? They both look like single slot cards.
This list myhtpc Graphics_cards is vague on the part numbers of the cards.
I don`t really want to buy a 64bit card and not able to use it, since it`s a waste in any other decent PC...

Ps. As a side note, cause I couldn`t find a GT520 :o, a ton of cards have been re-branded by Nvidia re-launches fermi based geforce cards. What`s also nice is they give the TDP.

Some heatsinks width and depth is the problem. They ordered the wrong card (2slots), it fits inside the chassis and lines up with the PCIE slot but I can`t plug it in. Now waiting again...

I had a quick look and mine is a MSI N520GT MD1GD3-LP. This works out of the box with Openelec.

Anyone tried OpenMediaVault on the microserver? I hear its quite decent for NAS/streaming functions.

I've been thinking of trying Plex (since my HDMI sound issue on openelec beta 4).

Questions:

1. Can both the media server and client run on the same machine (N40L).
2. Do you still have addons - i currently use my N40L as a download machine with SABNZBD suite + Transmission.
3. Can I send youtube videos from one device to another device, as in with xbmc (I can send youtube vids from my Android to play on my TV).

What i would like to know has any one here successfully flashed the bios on the micro server to change the internal PIO SATA connector to normal SATA ??.
And what bios and from where ??
And a brief description of how it was done please
Thanks .

I'm open to correction but I have just got my 40L and when I went into the bios to check there is an option now for Auto 1.5 and 3 on the POI Sata port.

Yup, did both of my N36L's using TheBay's ROM's, worked a treat.

Thread here.

Heyall. I recently aquired a Samsung BD-E5500 blu ray player running Plex and have it wired on my home network. I also have the HP N40L with openelec/XBMC wired in my man cave connected to the 46" . I would like to use the E5500 streaming from the N40L to another TV but thus far concluded that xbmc and plex dont talk nicely. I can see openelec as a source but the player does not recognise any files. So i asume i will have to run plex server on the HP .
My question is though does plex only run on Windows ( meaning I will have to re install ) and will my existing drives still work (pnp) since its formated with linux , think .
I have 3 x 2TB . 2 almost full and hate to lose those.
Any better options to suggest pls? Thanks.

If you are going to use Plex then dump the others. I use Plex all over my house quite happily. It is designed for multi room setups.
Plex server runs on Linux too. Check out their website. I am busy playing with an install in Linux Mint at the mo.

The HP chokes under multiple 1080p streams. I ended up turning my HP into a FreeNAS box with 5 x 2TB drives and use an old Core2Duo to run my Plex server (going to upgrade to i3). I ran it on my i7 desktop but felt it was overkill and don't want to run my desktop 24/7.
The HP handled a single 1080p stream or around 3 720p quite okay, so depends on your needs. I was however running Windows which chomps more resources than Linux, which is why I am playing with a Linux Mint setup on one of my other HP's now.

Thanx Mike. Mybiggest fear is losing the existing data when I plug my drives back. I can easily play around with the 250gb. Nothing much to lose there. I doubt I will watch more than one hd . It would just be nice cause the boys alwYs wanna watch when im watching a game.

Hi

I need some help please.
I'm running windows 7 on my HP-ProLiant-MicroServer - on my 250GB drive.

I now want to replace the 250GB drive with a 3TB drive.

The question is how to get the OS , settings , Sickbeard etc from the 250GB HD to the 3TB drive without losing anything.

There is data on the 3TB already.

Can I just clone the partition from the 250GB drive ?

How do I do this practically ?

Any help will be much appreciated :)

Setup a Linux box with a USB stick and see if your drives are readable. Nice and safe route to go.
I went and purchased a whole lot of 4GB sticks for R35 each so I can experiment with these different OS's. Works a treat when you just want to check stuff out before committing to a decision :)

Windows 7 System Image (in backup) works great for stuff like this. It will wipe your 3TB unfortunately.
