HP ProLiant MicroServer

See the bottom right of the episode thumbnails, the little green corner means unwatched, when it's orange it means it's in progress, I didn't change anything, default skin I downloaded Saturday, but the thing is when a episode is selected it disappears so I have to check the status before scrolling down.

Little thing like that and the player interface turned me off about reFocus, but the menus look so good.

Been trying to migrate my whole set up over to Plex, I'm just struggling with the PC client. It really sucks that there is no Linux version and my Microserver just tends to be a bit under powered for the Windows Plex client. Also struggling to get the remotes on the mobile apps working to control the Windows client (firewall issues).

Then I change to my OpenElec install and it's lightning quick, boots up super fast and has better skin support. Still a few little niggles with the sound sometimes when I leave the PC on for long periods of time but a quick reboot fixes that - looks like a memory leak on the beta version.

I would however move over instantly if Plex released a standalone version like OpenElec where I didn't need to use Windows underneath. That would be sick.

Thank you. I thought that might be it but then thought it was something to add to a playlist or something because a "plus" symbol is a very weird symbol to use to display what has been watched and un-watched but atleast there is something. What do you mean by:

"but the thing is when a episode is selected it disappears so I have to check the status before scrolling down."?

Yeah the players interface takes a little getting used too I suppose. What skin are you using then?

How are you struggling with the PC client? I had a few issues but with quite a bit of help from Soul Assassin ( and you of course) I managed to get it working almost 100%, just a few things to sort out. Which micro server do you have, the N40L? My one handles it perfectly, even full 1080p 3D movies.

I enjoy using windows as I have been able to install iTunes (have my whole music collection now), other windows software like virtual DJ ect so when we have friends over or if I'm in my lounge and need to do something, it's quick to get back into windows and have a fully functional PC on my tv. I know it's not ideal for heavy tasks but so far haven't had a single problem.

Speed. Windows takes long to boot (not major seeing that I leave the PC on), Windows continues thrashing my hard drive for some reason for about 20 minutes after it's booted which slows everything down, Windows needs an AV, Windows updates take forever.

My OpenElec box takes about 10 seconds to boot after the POST screens, is instantly good to go and fast.

And to top it all off not all my remotes buttons work in Plex out of the box and really not in the mood to fix it. OpenElec picks up my remote perfectly and has all the buttons I need working out of the box.

Yeah I suppose that makes sense. I was also looking into the OpenElec route, might actually still try it out still to see how it fares. Been having a few issues with Plex today. I have set it to automatically start when the PC boots up which it does but for some reason when it starts I can't do anything until I connect a mouse and click anywhere on the screen, it's almost as if something boots after Plex and therefore Plex is in the "background". This is extremely irritating as I don't have a mouse and keyboard setup so I then need to disconnect my mouse from my office PC, connect it to the HP, click on the screen and then disconnect it again which you can tell can be quite annoying. Also the remote I use kind of works but when impress certain buttons it launches Windows Media Center which I obviously can't just close without connecting the mouse again.

If I were to try the OpenElec route, would I need to download all the movie info and posters again or could I just copy the folders over or is there another way? Sorry for the long post.

Anything else I need to know about (good or bad) with regards to using OpsnElec over Windows?

This is why I use EmberMM [Current Project (http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=116941)] it stores all the show/movie info/jpgs/fanart etc in the source folder so if you choose to move it/ change players/PCs etc the only thing that is lost is the viewed/not viewed info.
I tried out Plex and have reverted to OPENELEC. I can stream the shows I want to my Android devices with ES File Explorer and Rock Player so I do not see the up side of Plex for ME.

Yes, but it's a crap remote. I've got one - very limited angle to work with and the buttons are sometimes difficult to press.

So got the remote to work first time with Plex (well just the arrow keys, OK button and back button). Have you been able to reprogramme the buttons at all? It's very easy to press the windows media key which starts it and then I'm screwed because I don't have a mouse and keyboard connected to close the programme so you could understand my frustration.

I see what you mean by the keys are not always easy to press but 95% of the time it works so it's fine until I get a replacement I suppose. At least I will have a receiver :p

Forgot to mention, this is the remote Compro K300 remote control for MCE

You can disable Windows Media Center completely in Windows and this will also disable those MCE buttons. You can also reprogram the Windows button with the following little hack: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/34749-remapping-mce-remote-green-button/

I think you need to leave Media Center enabled though if you want to use the above hack, it will just change what the button does.

I would recommend OpenElec over Plex on the Microserver. You will however have to download all artwork again as Plex does it's own thing I believe (not 100% sure). I use SickBeard though to manage and download my TV shows and I've set it to download all necessary artwork and store it in the folder, this way XMBC doesn't need to download this again if you rescan your library.

I would wait for the latest OpenElec to reach stable before you try it though, the current stable version is still running the old XBMC (10.0) and the new OpenElec which I'm running is still in beta.

There's a Windows application called media companion. Downloads all the metadata and stores it in each tv/movie folder so you never have to re download. It's really great and simple to use. I use my win7 machine to do this for my openelec collection once in a while. Automated. Also allows you to export your collection as an html list together with links to imdb. Correct incorrectly scraped movies.

Hi guys,

My company has a 5 year long service award where they usually book a weekend away for you and the spouse. However - I have no spouse and convinced them to rather do an EFT to some place like Esquire and let me choose things :P

So - thinking HP server, extra RAM , HDD, graphics card and IR reciever.

What models can I specify for the graphics card and IR receiver that work? I'm going to use my Harmony One remote and run Plex

Graphics card needs to be low profile. Radeon 5450 is good but doesn't work well with linux unless you do a whole bunch of extra coding. Otherwise GT210 (non passive as those are too big) or GT520 I heard can also be used

Try not to get a GT210 if you can, AFAIK GT510/610 will work nicely, as Nduimiso said, must be low profile and actively cooled. IR receiver I have no idea.

Running a 5450 with OPENELEC (linux) not a line of code from me, plug and play. It is also passively cooled so quieter and more energy efficient. Fits perfectly.

Snip...

I think that's the remote I have. The receiver works great with a Logitech Harmony. Chuck the remote and get yourself one. One of my best purchases ever.
Edit: Finally got the link to open - that's not the remote I have. I have some other cheapie. Still, get yourself a Harmony.

If I had to try OpenElec out today, will I not just be able to update to the latest version when it is released? What are the drawbacks of using the current version of OpenElec? Im only asking as I have my server at the office today and am able to then download and install OpenElec and then also scrape all my media so just considering whether or not to take the plunge. My only concerns are that I am really enjoying Plex and how I can view my media on my Ipad and other PC's in my house without any issue...
