HP ProLiant MicroServer

Will be getting my HTPC sorted out this weekend with the help of a fellow forumite. Question I wanted to ask is concerning the graphics card. i will be using openelec and XBMC and have picked up that a Nvidia card is preferable in this setup. these are 2 cards that i am considering:

Asus GT610-SL-1GD3-L
Asus ENGT520 SL/DI/2GD3(LP)

They both low profile and the costs are fairly similair. I am not graphic card expert so I wanted to get some views in terms of what card is the best to get and aif there may be better Nvidia options taking price into account as well. Will be watching upto 1080p.

the other issue is that of drives. does the 250gig HDD use up one of the 4 bays in the HP? And if I had to run the OS of a flash drive (will be fairly big to take into account all the metadata) will XBMC lag terribly?

Oh and what is the limit in terms of the size of drives i can get in there? Was thinknig of putting in 4 x 3TB's...

Hi
XBMC/openelec doesn't store the metadata on the boot drive, it uses the data storage area.
Yes, the internal 250GB drive uses one of the bays
I have a GT520, it's more than adequate.

I second that. You will have no probs with the GT520. My card is rated lower than the GT520 and I run everything fine at 1080P, even 3D movies run fine.

If I donwload openelec generic to install on the microserver, which version of sabnzb, sickbeard and couch potato should I download? Do I just download the linux versions?

The other thing I wanted to know, if I connect my laptop to the microserver via network cable, how do I access the laptop's content from openelec and vice versa to copy content?

OpenElec comes bundled with all those already installed.

EDIT: Oh and to answer your other question, OpenElec creates Windows shares for all it's folders which will show up like a normal share on your laptop.

For us OPENELEC fans they seem to be working in overdrive on this!

Hmmm, tempted to go the beta route. I was running the previous beta also and it was pretty stable most of the time. Just worried that some of my addons stop working.

Just upgraded to the new beta and so far so good. Still need to test a few things but loving the new audio engine.

Upgrade was painless and extremely quick.

got this beast today. installed openlec generic build 2.0. staring at a blank screen after reboot. help!! stock standard except for an extra hdd i put in...

meneer the screen is blank after the splashscreen. im wanting to stream to media players initially. is this not possible? using the old school vga port.

Ja sorry I don't think I have much valuable input to give seeing I have never tried using the VGA port, however I don't see why it shouldn't work.

Maybe somebody else can offer some advice here, but my advice would be just to get a low profile graphics card like the GT210 which should sort your video out as well as give you audio out on hdmi. It's cheap too, like 300 - 350 bucks.

Regarding the streaming bit I can give some input though. What devices do you want to stream to? Should work pretty well for that as you can share your media via regular windows shares as well as using DLNA. It is also nice that you can then watch media from the microserver too once you get a graphics card installed.

at the moment all my hdmi ports on the telly is occupied. ps3 + pvr. i havent read up on hooking up the ms to the ps3 but it must be possible. will be getting a wd live tomorrow and i have another network\dlna media player, mercer hd i think. so for now ill be content just to stream.

eventually i will get a nice amp and speakers and go the hdmi route but its pricey. the government approved this purchase and needs time for the next application.:p

has anybody has this blank screen after the install? maybe i should go back to the first generic build...

Try doing clean install and follow the instructions carefully. I tried the "update" method and had the same results you have. Clean install and all is now peachy

Installed the 1.0.2 generic and it boots fine. Now to figure out the shares. Stupid w7 laptop loses the connection everytime

Just got 1 of these. What can I install on it that is light to run and I need to be able to run dc++ rom it and I would like to log in remotely to I as I will only really be using this as NAS, however like I said.....need to be able to run dc++ and log in remotely to make sure everything is running smoothly (to lazy to connect a new monitor to it so will just do everything from my own pc over my network).
