HP ProLiant MicroServer

Isn't that GT610 a bit noisy compared to the fanless solution?

How bad could the GT210 really be?

I've got a 5450 in mine now, but I'm building another one this week so just wondering.

I keep on saying the GT210 is perfect. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this card for a media center. The fan on mine (Gigabyte model) is extremely quite and you cannot hear it over the base system noise level.

With the latest beta OpenElec it runs XBMC even smoother with this card and audio is perfect.

Now that's what I like to hear.

But for only R70 more do you think the GT610 still makes more sense? Especially since I want to switch to NVidia for the HD-Audio factor?

I mean my 5450 is completely fanless, but my Microserver has become more and more noisy over time so the base noise level is higher than in the beginning.

I'm yet to upgrade to the OpenELEC 3 Beta because it seemed a little silly if I can't support the Audio streams fully.

non-ecc? are esquire POV gpu's not adequate for the HP?

Yes, just regular non-ECC sdram. The POVs GPUs should be fine, I just bought a Gigabyte because I knew for a fact that the fan design would fit in to the MS and that it came packaged with a LP bracket.

It seems these HP Microservers are more expensive than the faster AMD E350?

Not as far as I'm aware? Also, do the E350's come in a fairly nice package such as the Microserver? I helped a colleague at work throw together a E350-based HTPC and he's pretty happy with it and I've been thinking of doing one myself as well, but it's still a bit expensive to do an entire system around it, from the research I've done. If this has since changed, then awesome.
If I remember correctly, the new socket FT1 chips are shipping early next year, no?

Well assuming you can get an HP for R1600 you'd at best have a 1.5 Ghz duel core Athlon II with 2GB RAM and pretty useless VGA-out graphics.
The E350 (R750) with 4GB RAM (R200) and a nice case (R350) comes to R1300 and you have a faster CPU with onboard HD 6130 graphics (VGA & HDMI), SATA3... just to name a few advantageous.

Sounds good, would be nice if you could put together a list with links that people can check out. I for one went the Microserver route because I couldn't find a case/mobo combo that was small enough and cheap enough. All the Micro ATX cases I looked at were really expensive.

Must say I am still extremely happy with the MS.

My N40L cost me R1400.00 last year including 2GB extra RAM and GT520 video card...
