HP ProLiant MicroServer

Oops, no... It was the G7 N40L. Sorry. :p

It's the AMD Turion II Neo N40L CPU @ 1.5 Ghz.

Question - is it necessary to install a GFX card to optimally run XBMC on the micro server?
I installed XBMC on my N36, hooked up it up to my TV (vga cable) and used a usb sound card and it could play everything, it only battled abit on one 1080i file.

I ordered Gigabyte GeForce GT 610, now having 2nd doubts about the benefit it will give me over the on board chip (Radeon HD 4200)? Sound ? better picture quality ?

Going to d/l Samsung's demo "Oceanic Life" 44MBit/s bitrate 1080p file to see if I can see the difference between the on board and the GT610 when it arrives.

must say that after the putting in the card and setting it up properly it is better than the on board card. Samsung's demo "Oceanic Life" could hardly run with the on board and is smooth with the gt610. Also got my resolution up from 1360*768 (VGA pc max res on my sony) to 1080p.

I'm not complaining at that price.

My MicroServer has played pretty much everything I have thrown at it. I have no complaints.

1080p mkv's? Tried a 13 GB Matrix 1080p the other day and it lagged. I'm running Win 7. Tried VLC, XBMC and Gom.

How do you guys pass sound from the tv, received through the Hdmi cable into a sound system (5.1 channel surround system).

The only option available under the sound setting in the windows control panel is stereo, as this is all the TV(Sony Bravia) can handle.

My sound system only has RCA(L/R) and optical(5.1) inputs. My TV only has*RCA(L/R) out puts.

How do I get it right to have surround sound, I don't really want to buy a receiver.

I found 4 port Hdmi switch with optical output but its overkill for my needs, anybody have any other ideas ?*
Can I get Hdmi optical converter/switch in South Africa ?

Is there not a pass-through option for the tv? If not, then you have no choice but to get an HDMI to optical splitter or buy an HDMI receiver...

What is the favourite operating system chosen by people building a HTPC ? I was really excited about using OPENelec, but the reality is that it is not installing as it should and won't run.

Windows 8 is not getting rave reviews so I might as well just build one using W7 Ulimate 64bit .... what do you think?

Openelec was a breeze to install on my micro server. Took literally a few minutes and all was up and running. Have you tried recreating the install flash drive?

I'll try to redo that. Do you think it might be faulty. It would not install at 1st as both memory sticks were the same brand and I could not differentiate.

Could it be that I need to update the BIOS ?

I didn't have to update the BIOS. Use Milkman's Guide if you're having trouble - http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=127492

Those are the steps I followed to set mine up without a hitch. Perhaps you downloaded the wrong version of openelec too? I used the generic build...

I have recreated the USB install drive with 2.99.1 and also tried 2.0.0 generic builds and both do the same. Only boot up to the OPENelec splash screen and then the screen goes black.

Have removed both HDD's during the install, so there is no confusion.

Is there a known problem with Kingston DataTraveler 8GB?
