HP ProLiant MicroServer

Yesterday morning, while I tried to connect to my proliant via Remote desktop, it kept on failing (Oh yes, it is Two months old). At first I didn't take anything serious as I was in a rush. Yesterday Afternoon I looked into the issue just to realize my NIC is broken. The server picks it up, and installs the drivers, but that is it.

Now just before you start shouting "lightning damage" left right and center, there was a huge storm that moved over yesterday afternoon, and hit on the house three times. Now I know it wasn't lightning damage, as the server was unplugged (Plus, all my other devices on the network is running just fine.

What should I do? Ring up HP, or just go and buy a new NIC?

I had the same problem, phone HP and tell them your NIC is not working anymore. I had a N36L motherboard and HP gave me a N40L motherboard :)

My HDD is packing up- the 250GB that came with the unit. I'm out of the HP one year warranty :(

I think the drive is a Seagate? Will the usual 2/3yr warranty on the drive be valid, or does the HP 1 yr warranty replace individual components' warranties that might have been longer than 1yr?

If the drive is still covered, which dealer in CPT will RMA a drive they didn't sell??

Check the serial no. online and phone the suppliers like Rectron

Hi all. Lately I have been having problems with my HP Microserver. Over the last few days it has been freezing up during playback (sometimes even on the menu) which then forces me to hard re-boot the machine as nothing is responsive anymore. It has been working perfectly the last few months and only recently started happening. Also the last week, when I add new media, it only pulls through info for some of the shows / movies and the artwork displays only half way (as if the image was only half downloaded) - I am connected to the internet so that is not the problem.

My setup is Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, 6gigs RAM. I have the Plex Server and the Plex client running on the same HP Microserver connected directly to my TV via HDMI. I am also running the latest version of Plex Media Server.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what could cause this all of a sudden?

It's summer time now and the machine may just be overheating. Make sure that it has sufficient ventilation and that the system fans are all running smoothly and the heatsinks and fans are dust free. Runnin Plex Media Server on the MicroServer will most definitely stress the CPU a helleva lot, this could cause the thing to just seize up if it gets too hot. I wouldn't recommend running PMS on the MicroServer.

How does the HP handle running Windows + XBMC + SAB + SB + CPS all at the same time though?
anyone have that setup?

...or even using OpenELEC + SAB + SB + CPS?

The server is out in the open and has plenty of ventilation so doubt it is over heating. Why would it stress out the CPU so much? I don't stream the content to any other device other than to my TV (as mentioned it is connected via HDMI from the server to the TV). It has been running perfectly for a while now and only recently frozen up (even sometimes when not in use at all). Isn't the Microserver regarded as one of the best things to use as a media centre tho?

It runs this perfectly. I'm running the OpenElec setup as you have listed above and as long as your are loading off most of the display workload off on to a dedicated GPU you shouldn't have any problems. The problem with Plex Media Server is that it chows CPU cycles to transcode the media, will run the MS close to 100% constantly if it has to transcode a 1080p stream.

I have run full 1080p 3D blu ray rips just perfectly, never had a single bit of lag or anything during playback.

As I mentioned above, if it has to transcode HD streams it is likely to push the MS CPU to ~100% constantly. If the media is not being transcoded it should be fine though. Maybe just check this by opening up task manager while playing some content and see where the CPU usage is sitting. If that's not the issue then at least we can eliminate this as the cause.

Yeah I know what you are saying but I highly doubt this is the problem as I haven't had this problem at all in the past (lately have only been watching TV shows ect - no 3D blu ray movies ect). I think it might have something to do with the latest update but can't remember when the freezing started before or after.

I just wanted to know if anyone else had this problem and what the fix was. Will see if it happens again in the next few days.

Any info on why the movie posters download but only display half and why some movies say they fetched the data but show blank, even when I manually go in to fix incorrect match ect?

One of my networked machines had a serious problem hanging when browsing movies and tvshows. This was due to a poor connection to the router. Now I know this isn't your problem, but it seems some skins are very much dependent on the artwork and will hang the machine if it can't get it, so perhaps this is what is happening to you? Have you tried a different skin, or the standard skin (if you're not using it?)

Did you check if the actual covers on your HDD aren't corrupted maybe, maybe it's seeing the cover and skips downloading a new one?

Will give this a try. The next best thing to do is go to all the files with messed up cover art, un-match them and then do a scan again and let it re-download the cover art ect and see if that fixes the problem.

For me the whole objective behind using OPENelec was to free up an additional drive bay .... otherwise I might as well install Windows 7 Ultimate and run Media Centre and XBMC. Think I would gain a lot more functionality and use from the box.

The oe install is a couple f hundred meg if that. Just chuck in a 2tb drive into bay 1 and install onto that.

I'm gonna run Windows too, but for other reasons

-Fast Copying with NTFS File Systems
-Hyperspin / Emulators
-Volume Normalization for XBMC/PseudoTV/Moja
-Maximum Hardware Support
-Official Drivers
-Easy MCE Remote Customization
-Can Run Windows Tools (Torrents/Airshare/etc)

This volume normalization, is it part of xbmc or windows? And if so where do I activate it?

Windows afaik. XBMC uses replaygain for audio files but doesn't normalise video audio to the best of my knowledge. You will find it in your audio settings in Windows, depending on your OS. Personally I don't like it, as it seems to compress the signal in ways I really don't like...
