HP ProLiant MicroServer

I didn't remove a thing when I installed. Installed to the 250gig drive that it comes with and use my other drives as storage. I don't have experience installing the OS straight to a USB flash drive so can't help there...

So I now have a second MicroServer running in the garage with drives shared and Plex installed. :)

I didn't have to update the BIOS. Use Milkman's Guide if you're having trouble - http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=127492

Those are the steps I followed to set mine up without a hitch. Perhaps you downloaded the wrong version of openelec too? I used the generic build...

Hi DJ, I have tried both the current 2.0.0 and Beta 2.99.1, but get the same end result. I'm doing all the setup in my home office before connecting it to the TV so I have not plugged in the GeForce210 yet. Was afraid the new card would disable the onboard VGA and leave me with my dick in my hand for the installation.

I have been following Milkmans PDF to the letter. Only difference is that the 8GB Kingston can only be formatted for FAT32.
Have tried it with an old el-cheapo 4GB flash drive from Computer Corporation .... same result. Everything else I have is 128MB or 8/16GB.

Any other ideas ?

Have you tried installing to the internal drive from the stick, instead of installing the OS on the stick itself?

Personally, I set the machine up in its entirety (gfx card, additional memory) and then did the installation. I'm really not very technically-minded so won't be able to advise you on much at all, apart from explaining how I did it...

For me the whole objective behind using OPENelec was to free up an additional drive bay .... otherwise I might as well install Windows 7 Ultimate and run Media Centre and XBMC. Think I would gain a lot more functionality and use from the box.

The thing has got drive-bays galore though. There's not much more that I can help you with, sadly.

Use "EASEUS Partition Master” - that's what I did when I had problems getting the USB stick to work ;)

also, are you installing to a USB Drive? why not install to a Harddrive?

Seems there is an issue with some Kingston drives. Solution was to manually format the thing to Fat32 before running the batch file or exe file to create the install stick. But thereafter I'm outta my depth...

Hi Keeper, I am trying to install to a USB on the motherboard but all attempt have failed. Will try the EASEUS Partition Master on my next try.

The reason for installing to the USB was to free up an additional drive bay. Have loads of stuff on various HDD that I need to start copying. Was going to use the 250GB that came with the N40L to build a new PC for the office as I have all the other parts lying around. Then I could have 4x 2GB HDD's in the N40L.

Check that the flash drive doesn't have a "U3" type drive facility, does my one drive has this and behaves as you describe. I tried to format it without any success.
Normal drive a 5min to up and running.

I'm gonna run Windows too, but for other reasons

-Fast Copying with NTFS File Systems
-Hyperspin / Emulators
-Volume Normalization for XBMC/PseudoTV/Moja
-Maximum Hardware Support
-Official Drivers
-Easy MCE Remote Customization
-Can Run Windows Tools (Torrents/Airshare/etc)

What would be the best flavour / version of Windows to run on this server? Installed W7 Ultimate 64 bit, but now it does not want to see the 2TB drive. Can something just work for a change !!! Aaaargh!!

I hope you didn't accidentally format that drive to linux's EXT filesystem, otherwise you've just lost all your data on that drive...
(that might be a reason Windows isn't picking it up)

did you at least plug them out when installing openELEC?

put the drive in your PC now, and check if that drive is still working... I know I would...

Any Pro Version of Windows 7 would be fine.
I'm running Ultimate on mine.

AND that's why we use Linux. Good luck.

Yesterday morning, while I tried to connect to my proliant via Remote desktop, it kept on failing (Oh yes, it is Two months old). At first I didn't take anything serious as I was in a rush. Yesterday Afternoon I looked into the issue just to realize my NIC is broken. The server picks it up, and installs the drivers, but that is it.

Now just before you start shouting "lightning damage" left right and center, there was a huge storm that moved over yesterday afternoon, and hit on the house three times. Now I know it wasn't lightning damage, as the server was unplugged (Plus, all my other devices on the network is running just fine.

What should I do? Ring up HP, or just go and buy a new NIC?

Yes. You can use the upgrade.
