HR mistake - should I inform them?

Just drop HR an email and say you noticed a discrepancy, the amount in the letter could also have been wrong (chances are bigger of this anyway) so that would set your mind at ease. And if it isn't it's cheaper to pay it back now than after a few months.

Just putting this out there, remember the NSFAS student who got the millions by mistake? Any amount no matter where it comes from paid to you that does not belong to you and you keep it, its stealing...
Playing devil's advocate here.

The fact that the nett salary on my payslip was the amount paid into my bank account, means that it's the amount that's on the payroll system. So it was approved by at least one person.

I'm wondering if someone didn't make a slip with the increase letter while typing it out.

Anyway, I'm going to talk to my manager when he calls. I sent him a WhatsAapp message to call me. Knowing him, he will only respond to my emails two weeks from now (I once saw a glimpse of his inbox when he shared his screen. 8 000 unread mails.)

If you fear your HR, do a letter to them, CC the directors and managers too....

Dear xxx

I hereby refuse to pay the additional money in my account to you in cash, as requested. Please correct the payroll system accordingly.

Why if the letter is incorrect
Do your own calculation, old gross plus increase percentage

So I got a letter that I will be getting an increase last month.

I log into our HR system thing to check something unrelated and noticed the gross basic salary on my payslip is higher than the amount they told me in the increase letter.

The amount on my payslip is what was paid into my bank account - so the higher amount. I didn't notice because the amount being paid into my account differs every month due to standby and/or overtime.

Just wondering what you guys would do in a case like this?
I'm still recovering from the shock that you not only have a job...but got a raise?

Raise it now, cause they will claw it back anyways and it's better to query it now and get it sorted out.

I would inform them, as this could affect your tax later on.
Rather get it sorted out now.

Any decent payroll system will automatically calculate the correct amount of tax to deduct from the gross salary. I doubt this would affect his tax in any way.

But if there is a payback correction to be made at a future date... he is liable to both SARS and his employer for the shortfall.
Or hopefully he might get a refund from SARS.
