I have a Vodacom 1Gb Advanced Broadband contract using a K3520 modem. I stay in Roosevelt Park in Johannesburg. Is HSDPA 7.2 available? If so, how can I connect and is there any added cost involved?

A good place to start would be: http://www.vodamap.net/3g/

Unless you want better OOB rates then the Advanced bundle is not really worth the extra cash IMO. If you have a bundle you can connect there are no other costs.

Edit: Did the person at the Vodashop not explain these things to you or help you check your coverage? What motivation did they have to suggest you take the Advanced bundle?

All HSDPA Vodacom towers are 7.2. So if you can get HSDPA signal, it's got 1.8 / 3.6 / 7.2

Maybe, but that doesn't mean they have the backhaul capacity to provide 7.2 from each tower.

The map is not particularly helpful. It shows I shouldn't have HPDSA connection at all but for the past couple of years I have had no trouble, initially at 1.8 and more recently at 3.6. The signal strength is normally 4 out of 5 bars with occasional days with 3/5.

The main reason for taking the Advanced option was for the better OOB rates. My overall costs for the year should be more or less the same compared to taking a bigger Standard bundle given the limited carry-over period for unused portions of the bundle and there is also no need to hassle with top up blocks when I do need more than the contract bundle. Less hassle is more important to me than less cost anyway. :)

Cool. Some sales people got stuck on the 7.2 point of the brochure and forgot about the OOB rates which was what the main objective of the advanced bundle was :)

Tha advanced option allows you to connect at 7.2, assuming your signal is good enough, so it doesn't cost anything more than you are paying already. It should be available on any cell, but as ginggs says, connecting to the tower at 7.2 is no guarantee that you'll get throughput of 7.2. In fact it's quite unlikely...
