Heya

I am looking to carry bidirectional audio over a (stationary & in range)HSDPA connection to our studio for a remote/outside broadcast. I can run at 128k both ways, and maybe step down to 64k (only voice has to go accross the link, music is still handled by studio). Has anyone done any tests on how stable the speed is?

It would work out cheaper for us to use HSDPA even at the R2/meg option.

128kbit/sec * 2 (bidirectional audio) = 256kbit/sec
256kbit / 8 = 32kbyte/sec
32kbyte/sec * 60 = 1920KB/min
1920KB/min * 60 = 115200KB/hour
115200KB * 3 = 345600KB/show (3 hour)
345600 / 1024 = 337.5MB
337.5MB * R2 = R675

We normally pay R800 for telkom ISDN installation and 3 hrs calls plus R600 codec rental per day. We also get to setup a broadcast (in HSDPA range) in minutes not weeks as with ISDN!

IMO this si the sort of thing that HSDPA was designed for, but whether it will work in practice - no idea - I have never used HSDPA before, but if you do try this, then a fixed external antenna is essential. Your best bet will be to test it out using a rental for a few days.

Vodacom say you can expect 400 - 800 KB/s, peaking at 1.2

I wouldn't rely on the service for anything commercial if your setup is ad-hoc. Think of the consequences if Vodacom decides to do an impromptu upgrade on the day you need it.

I know 702/567 Talk radio use broadband for their outside broadcasts and loinks between JHB & CPT studios. Maybe you could make some discrete enquiries.

With some products on the market you do not actually need HSDPA to do what you described. You can do it with GPRS/EDGE for voice, but Ihave not tried it personally.

Try AudioTX POTS product and tell us if it does what you want.

Good luck.

we tried this software on their demo across a wireless link but telkom actually take a shorter time to install ISDN via their broadcasting desk than POTS...

This has been done oversea's over standard GSM with a fancy codec on a moving train! hehe

most of the places we wish to broadcast will not have a POTS line say in the middle of a township etc (of decent quality anyway) while we have checked and 3g cover our mandate area
