HTC DESIRE HD

With HTCSense.com it says my phone is 5km NNE of where my phone actually is. Not bad, but still not working as it should.

with regards to email and push functionality, I have had a couple of people asking me if the DHD does have this full capability. They have used blackberry's saying that they get full push functionality and that sort of thing with their blackberry's. So I tried to do a bit of research on it myself, but I am not really that clued up on emailing and push and imap and such, altho I do know a bit. But all I could really fathom is that with gmail, you definitely get full push functionality, but what about other emails? ie: from servers and things? I read something about activesyncx or something like that. But I am not too sure, also taking note that IMAP is not the same as push, although similar. So yeah, just want to check that I have all my facts straight before I start saying things i am not fully sure of.

What happened to the agreement between TomTom and HTC.
Why no TomTom on the DHD's?
HTC Locations still using Route66?

HTC Locations, HTC’s new mapping experience, comes preloaded with TomTom’s location-rich maps, resulting in a zero-wait navigation experience. HTC Locations is initially available on the new HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z smartphones in Europe and Asia and will be extended to a wide variety of future smartphones and geographies.

“I am very pleased to be providing HTC customers with TomTom’s accurate location and navigation content on their phones wherever they are. The beauty of it is that the maps are preloaded and instantly available at users’ fingertips. For the first time, this makes the power of TomTom navigation content available ‘in-pocket’ for HTC smartphone users”, says Maarten van Gool, Managing Director of TomTom Licensing.

Maybe it's still on the way for us...?

Maybe it's still on the way for us...?

Nope...

Last week TomTom trumpeted with a press release a partnership with HTC for the HTC Locations mapping application now available on the smartphones of the Taiwanese brand. According to the spin-doctor-crafted TomTom press release, both companies announced “they are combining strengths to deliver superb navigation and location solutions on HTC smartphones.”

However, only the map data is coming from TomTom (Tele Atlas); we got confirmation from mobile navigation company Route66 that HTC is indeed using their turn-by-turn engine to power HTC Locations.

Here's a better explanation from the comments at mytechnews.info

There’s a lot of manufacturers navigation software and devices, but besides Google’s own Google Maps Navigation, there’s really only two companies making Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data and selling them to all the different navigation sofware/device companies.
These two companies delivering GIS data to all navigation companies are:
NAVTEQ http://www.navteq.com – - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navteq
Tele Atlas http://www.teleatlas.com – - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tele_Atlas

NAVTEQ and Tele Atlas both used to be independent GIS data companies, selling GIS data to all navigation companies, including TomTom, who used Tele Atlas data. But in June 2008 TomTom purchased the company Tele Atlas, shortly after Nokia had purchased the only competitor NAVTEQ.

So in reality it’s TomTom’s daughter comapny Tele Atlas who delivers the GIS data and Route 66 delivering the navigation software for HTC DEsire and Desire Z.

No matter what navigation device/software you purchase today, they will either have GIS data from Tele Atlas (TomTom) or NAVTEQ (Nokia). The only exception for this rule is probably Google Map’s own navigation, who has started creating their own GIS data. But Google Navigation also used to have Tele Atlas (TomTom) GIS data until a year ago:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Maps#Development_history
Quote: “In early October 2009, Google replaced Tele Atlas as their primary supplier of geospatial data in the U.S. version of Maps and use their own data.”

As Nokia is a direct competitor to HTC in the smart phone market, HTC probably prefers to get their GIS data from Tele Atlas (TomTom).

Finally got frustrated with HTC Sense and deleted the accounts - PC and phone. Reinstalled it and it is working perfectly! :) Luv it!

Just a quick question, want to get the MTN 1 day uncapped bundle - but MTN customer service (all three reps that I spoke to) has no idea how it works! Got three different answers: one told me it is only available for prepaid customers, the other two gave me two different no's to use - with both not working! Anyone here used it? I want to get it so I can download some apps for my DHD.

gonna go past the mtn store again tomm and bug them as you guys made me realy realy want to get this phone now lol
sounds so awesome :)

I had the same thing, then I loaded Google Maps (or was it Locations?) and let it get a GPS fix on my position, so that I could see my location on the map on the phone's screen.

Then I re-logged into my HTC Sense account, updated my position and it was then displaying correctly :)

Thanks LightningSux, I will give it a bash.

I've also figured out how to get Google Maps Navigation working (it's still in beta though, and I can see why - e.g. it displays non-existent / still-to-be-built? roads on one of my routes; the (synthesised?) voice is pretty bad, especially pronouncing South African street names :p) ...

I'd advise to get a proper car holder as well ;)

1. Install HTC Sync. I downloaded and installed the latest version from here, but a slightly older version can also be accessed from your phone's SD card if you choose the connection type as 'Disk drive' when connecting the USB cable.

2. Go to this xda-developers.com thread and download the Brut Google Maps (it's a modded ver.) I downloaded the "maps4.6.0.4686-brut-renamed-tagged.apk" (it's tagged as "probably not usable - random ANRs" [App Not Responding?], but I haven't seen any problems with it yet).

3. Once downloaded, make sure your phone's connection type is set to "HTC Sync", and that it is visible in the PC's HTC Sync app (will probably take a little while the first time to install the drivers). You'll use this to install the Brut Google Maps

4. In the HTC Sync app, click on "Application installer", and browse for the .APK file you downloaded. Complete the install process on your phone.

5. If you downloaded the "brut-renamed-tagged" version, you should now see 3 new apps in the phone's apps menu with [brut] appended on the name and / or as part of the icon, namely: "Latitude [brut]", "Maps [brut]" and "Navigation" (with "BRUT" in red overlayed on the icon).

6. Load "Maps [brut]", and "Search Maps" for your destination. If successful, you should see one of those Google Place Markers with the address (mine shows a red A with the address bubble above it).

7. Touch the address bubble above the marker, and it will load the marker / place info screen.

8. In the row of icons at the top, touch the right-turn arrow and select the navigation mode - e.g. "Driving Navigation".

9. It will the say "Getting driving directions", and will hopefully take only a couple of seconds to calculate your route (I previously had the issue of it hanging when I tried the other way of going directly through the modded Navigation app).

10. Proceed to to drive [or walk :)] to your destination. (I suggest getting a friend to drive you while you play with the app - it can be quite distracting at first).

11. One of the cool things is the integrated Street View - it should be accessible by touching the person icon on the bottom right (if not immediately visible, try advancing in your route directions by one or two points first).

Note that this requires a working data connection, so if you're using the phone's data connection (3G etc.), it's probably best to have a data bundle. Supposedly the Brut mod allows it to cache data locally, but I have seen that it sometimes reloads from scratch (a bug?).

You could possibly try and pre-cache the data by 'flying' over the route you want to take before you leave home (and thereby take advantage of your WiFi / ADSL connection, if you have one).

Taking all the above in to account, I have still bought the premium navigation license for SA and surrounding areas. In my view, it's still worth it for now (properly pre-cached / locally stored maps; better navigation voices; route preview; better routing and maps; not in beta). Only down-side is the lack of good POIs in the Premium Navigation App (who to blame - Route 66 or Tele Atlas?).

I think to get this working, you need to search for and install "Street View on Google Maps" from the Android market first :)

Well, it works okay for the 1st 100-150MB and then the "fair-use" policy kicks in.
Then, if you try download any large files (100MB+) it will time out! Oh, and it will also slow down to a "dial-up" speed... (Actually a 56K modem would have been faster by that stage!) ;)

Well ladies and gentlemen I am now the proud owner of DHD! yay finally, although the buggers didnt phone before they dilevered and I was out shopping. Just dropped my basket and drove like a mad man so back to shopping now and then the unboxing will happen when I get back :) Thanks for keeping going guys through these tough times ;)
