HTC Desire S Official ICS update

Any one Updated their Desire S using the RUU from the HTC Dev Page Its a huge downlaod about 400 MB , just want to know if the WWE ( i asume world wide english) will work on a Vodacom branded phone and how easy / dificult it is to do, i just dont want to brick the phone and face the wrath :mad: of my wife :love:

Its not available OTA yet :(
 
I upgraded my wife's MTN (i.e. not branded) Desire S using the RUU a while back. The upgrade was smooth enough -- you just need to make backups, follow the instructions carefully and be prepared to wait some time.

I did it using the WWE from the HTC Dev Page about a month ago, maybe more - my phone was bought from a Telkom store when they knocked down the price of the Desire S to R998 some months ago, so is using an 8ta SIM.
I don't think it's a ''branded'' 8ta phone though, like you describe the Voda. one to be, so don't know if you'd have a problem there ?

It was an easy process to follow & carry out.

What I don't like about it is that a few more apps seem to open (run in the background) automatically now than when it had Gingerbread, so I have to keep closing ones not in use more than I'd like.

I'm waiting for the 1-year guarantee to be over with, then might test out my rooting abilities & a new ROM.
Even with this RUU ICS, there is still some lag when first starting to use the phone after its been in sleep-mode (not fully shut down even).

By the way, am using Apex Launcher which does help, as I'm not keen on the HTC one & hate the Sense effects.

nope, tried downloading it but it looks like the files been taken down, stupid link is here but redirects back to home page, found links to it on another site but I'm a little weary of not using the link from htc :(

Haven't noticed any bugs apart from the lag, if that can be called a bug.
It's not like you try to do something, and the phone won't let you navigate to/from an icon, so all seems fine to me with this ICS version.

I don't think this HTC-sanctioned ICS is that much better than the Gingerbread which came out on the phone.

What you can do is contact HTC toll-free from a landline on 0800-982773 (goes to a VOIP connection; call centre based in Egypt), and ask whoever answers if they're either going to reinstate those RUU files for the Desire S, or if they're issuing it OTA.

Last time I spoke to them, they said there won't be an OTA option, but worth trying to find out if that's changed & a date it might happen.

That call centre might want to register the phone (IMEI attached to your surname) before answering any questions, so it might put you off phoning in the first instance ?
 
One bug is the links bug. When someone sends you a link or a number via SMS, WhatsApp and you click on it, the app crashes.

The other that I've heard of is that when you put it on vibrate, it turns vibrate off after a while. - not to sure if this is an isolated incident.

Afaik the 4.0 release was never ment to be a public release, it's for developers, from what I remember they tell you this when you download it.

Good to know about these things -

Personally don't use my phone for SMS's, so wouldn't of come across the app crashing & also don't use 'vibrate' function, so couldn't confirm or deny that fault.

I can confirm that when I spoke to their call centre before taking the decision to d/load ICS, agent did say that it wasn't an official HTC upgrade, so to do so at my own risk. Funny how it was on their HTC site, but your comment that it would be for developers now makes perfect sense. Don't recall them specifying this fact at all. There was just a PDF fact sheet on how to proceed with the d/load.

I rooted by flashing a pre-rooted rom...

Of the top of my head:

In order to get it S-off I needed to downgrade my HBOOT to 0.98.00000 (cuze the phone was on HBOOT 2.00.0002)

This was the post that helped shed some light on it for me:

I then made it S-Off + recovery with the Revolutionary tool.

Flashed the ROM zip from recovery then flashed the update from recovery and was done = Custom rom + root.

Yeah I found out that's the only route so I will lose the remaining 14 months warranty on my phone :(

I did wipe the system cache mistakenly while trying to root with Bin4ry root with restore and the phone seems to be working buttery smooth now :)

Hi.
1. The update will never be OTA.
2. WWE - world wide edition.
3. Can you install it on a branded phone? Yes yes and yes. Just make sure that the phone is not rooted.

As long as you know that 4.0 is not really a official release to the public: attachment.jpg and once "upgraded" you cannot go back without voiding your warranty.

Why do you need to let HTC know if you're going to root the phone & load a custom ROM ?
Is it only if you're still in a warranty period ?
If out of the warranty, then I presume one can simply follow the xda instructions to root etc. by getting back to the Hboot version, 0.98.0000 .

Please will you confirm if that's ok, as it's something I'd like to try once the warranty on my phone is over, in a few months time.

Obviously when out of warranty you need not worry about voiding warranty but you would still need to go via htcdev to unlock once you have upgraded to the latest ICS.

All I am saying is that when you load the latest "official" ICS it automatically upgrades your Hboot version.

To unlock your boot-loader in order to downgrade your Hboot you need to go to htcdev.com (this tells HTC that you are unlocking your boot-loader and by doing that your warranty becomes void).

The better option is to be on an older HTC ROM (Android 2.3) and then unlock without having to go via htcdev as per this post on XDA:

[/URL] This way, from what I understand you can unroot + relock your boot-loader and send it in for warranty without HTC knowing about it.
