HTC Desire S Official ICS update

@ Park@82 .. thanks for all the detail provided in your Post nos. 20 & 21.

Although I'm not overly dissatisfied with the unofficial ICS I downloaded to the phone, I'll hold onto the information you've provided, and see if it's worth the extra time & effort involved in getting to put on a custom ROM, once the warranty's finished.

gees why does HTC need to make things so complicated... I prefer Samsung and flashing with Odin :)

Im honestly unsure now what I should do...

This phone is running Android 2.3.5 with Software number 2.10.401.8

Don't upgrade to the latest RUU if you want to go custom before the warranty expires.
What is your Hboot version?

Im on section F of creating the goldcard, but I cant find the Gold Card tool to flash with. Link seems to be down

Trust me I know the feeling. I have had to flash 2 of these and it was a different procedure on both occasions because of the Hboot versions iirc. Both times took me several hours to get it done. The latest one had me swearing like a sailor when I found out I had to go dig from the start for figure out how to flash it (I offered to do it for someone because thought it would be the same procedure as the previous one.)

This is probably the fist thing to check:
How To: Check if your phone is S-OFF or S-ON and your HBOOT version
1. Disable Fast Boot. (Setting > Power > uncheck Fast Boot)
2. Turn off your phone.
3. Turn on your phone by pressing the power button and volume down button together.
4. You will see a white screen with "S-OFF" or "S-ON" and your hboot version on top of the screen.
NOTE: If your phone is S-ON, you won't be able to root or flash custom ROMs to your phone. To make it S-OFF, follow the guide below.

My goal was to get it s-off with a custom recovery so that I could flash any ROM from the SD card (zip file).
The Revolutionary tool can do this ( http://revolutionary.io ) but it only works on the older versions of hboot (0.98.0000 and 0.98.0002).

So you need to downgrade Hboot, if you are on Hboot v2.xx . There are different procedures to do this depending on your software version:

If you loaded the latest ICS RUU then you need to use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318919 that you linked above. Yes I also had to google some of the files/tools required... (This is harder and is dependent on HTCdev.)

I've referred back to this & other threads on XDA every now & then (over the last few months), and decided that it's not worth the time & effort required - especially as I'd put ICS RUU onto my phone. I'm going to leave it as is, and the next thing I buy will probably be a 7" tablet, which will hopefully come pre-loaded with J/Bean.

I personally don't use the Desire S for much more than reading e-books, so was treating an attempt or 2 at learning the process, but they've made it so complex, it'll be more trouble (to me) than it's worth.
 
I downloaded the ICS RUU on a Voda contract phone some months ago and have no doubt it made the phone a LOT better. I'm a real Noob and some of the instructions for HTC-Dev were very confusing to me, but I sat down on some windy Sunday afternoon, read everything VERY well and took things step by step. All worked great. But as one always want more, I've snooped around, but still find the HBoot downgrade scary. So I found Thantos's Desire XS version 1.1 [Sense 4.1 lite] [Android 4.0.4] at this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2006392 . IT's still ICS, but so much smoother and less bloated. Its a lot faster and the battery life is FANTASTIC. Importantly, it doesn't need S-off. It has an option towards the end for those of us who unlocked via HTC-Dev, so a few extra steps and it works great. A v1.2 is in the works, but thantos is a sickly guy and his wife (missus) spilled coffee all over his machine, so somewhat delayed, but its the best ROM I've used so far. It also gave me the gusts to Root my Samsung Galaxy Tab with CM9, then CCM10 and some months ago an experimental CM 10.1
