I have downloaded the new ROM from Leaf, flashed my phone and got 1.5 running. However, I don't have the onscreen keyboard. Normally this is not a problem, but the problem arises in that the normal keyboard lacks both a CTL key and an ESC key. So I was hoping the onscreen would have at least one of these. However it does not appear to exist.

Should I re-flash my phone, to see if maybe my ROM was messed up, or is there something actually messed up with my unit.

Or does anyone know how to turn the onscreen keyboard on. I have used the setup wizard, and it list blank for my user input.

I use SSH sessions to control my servers remotely. CTRL and ESC keys are vital with things like "tail -f" and VIM.

And besides that. Why the hell does my on screen keyboard not work. I even re-flashed the phone, after re-downloading the ROM. It still doesn't have onscreen keyboard. Why does the ROM not bloody well work. I'm really getting annoyed with this phone

I used connectbot for ssh/telnet. A single tap on the trackball enabled ctrl-mode. I didn't use ctrl-esc, but I'm pretty sure it was also catered for.

EDIT:
I remember the Camera button can be mapped to esc. So you could tap the tracball to enable ctrl-mode, then press the camera button.

Viola - CTRL-ESC.

I don't know what exactly your setup is, so can't advise on the on-screen keyboard. I'm also running Cyanogen's ROM at the moment, which is likely different to what you've got.

Unders Settings -> Locale&Text, I've got a bunch of options to modify keyboard and virtual keyboard behavior.

Does anyone know if the HTC dream from MTN contracts are NETWORK locked or NOT???

i got a HTC Dream with Android 1.5. Also cant seem to get the on-screen keyboard

I managed to get a onscreen keyboard working on mine last night.

Here is the URL I found the instructions on: http://androidforums.com/android-ap...tc-dream-apps-w-soft-keyboards.html#post36381

I put the HTC_IME.apk file that worked for me here: http://drop.io/HtcDreamOnscreenKeyboard

From the above forum:
man don't bother I found a way* to do it using only Apps Installer.

-download Apps Installer from Market.
-go to 4shared.com and search for 'HTC_IME.apk', download it.
-put that apk somewhere on your SD card.
-install with apps installer (if you need to remove for some reason you can under Manage applications, there is a keyboard calibration one in there, but also a touch input... so maybe it's both? I didn't look before I installed, maybe someone can confirm this for me. EDIT: uninstall touch input if you need to get rid of it.)
-then go to Locale & text and turn on Touch Input, adjust settings, try the tutorial.

suck it rogers! go sell your magics somewhere else.

Im expecting my HTC Dream in a "few days" (quoting MTN shop).

Has anyone managed to update their ROM to Android 1.6? How would I go about doing this?
I've read the odd How-To on the net but im scared of bricking the phone.

Any help from someone who has tried will be greatly appreciated!

From Autopage 2-3 days turned into 1 day! Cool!

So I got it, but sim is not activated yet... Luckily it works well on WiFi!

Going to try the OSK tonite - will give feedback in the AM...

I followed this as well, but at 1st no go...

So I downloaded AnySoftKeyboard from the Market & it used that for awhile!

But then retried it using the dropIO file u posted & it worked! Cool! Now I can use my Dream one handed! Just like my Treo or Centro! And the HTC keyboard is a bit better than the ASK one! And it works in landscape as well! So I don't need a Magic after all!
