HTC Flyer now available on MTN

Just got a call from my local MTN Store saying that the Flyer has now arrived. Should be picking it up at lunchtime - so much for productivity today!
 
It's the one advertised for R299pm. Not the cheapest, but the size and the included pen means that it fits my needs and doesn't have a lot of competition here at the moment. Even after subtracting the cost of the airtime and the initial data bundle you're still paying around R4k for the device over two years, so I guess you have to decide carefully if it's right for you.
 
Just wanted to ask i see they're quoting prices for device & contract separately these days probably because of the CPA.
For example:
Topup 200 = R200
Device = R150
Total = R350

Now with the CPA would one be able to cancel the voice/data part and still keep paying the device part? I'm sure its been discussed but i dont wanna go through all those cpa threads
 
Anyone have a link to this deal. I know it was announced on tech sites but I cant find it on MTN anywhere...

Now quick question if you guys know. Im looking to renew my contract as a VC customer. I currently have a DHD so if I port my number to MTN, get this deal instead of a new phone, attach a better bundle for my DHD and get a further data bundle for the Flyer could I use the sim in my DHD to make calls.

I guess I could go to an MTN store but the chances of them knowing anything is pretty slim...
 
I've ordered mine on the R299 deal, with the topUp option. Glee.

But holycrapsticks, what a mission to get it organised. MTN's service is pretty shoddy.
 
Got it at last. But MTN sure made me jump through hoops to get it! Anyway, first impressions are of typical HTC quality, but it's my first Android device so there's bound to be a bit of a learning curve.

Some interesting news, Flyer might get Honeycomb in the next couple of months.

We knew that Android 3.2 was little more than a tailor-made edition of Android 3.1 for 7-inch slates, but even after speaking with Huawei, we weren't exactly sure when it would be rolling out to things other than its own MediaPad. Our pals over at This is my next managed to confirm that it'll be landing as early as this summer, and for better or worse, it'll be the last major Android release prior to Ice Cream Sandwich hitting retail devices in Q4. Moreover, it's bruited that v3.2 will bring support for Qualcomm CPUs as well as NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chipset, which could lead to HTC's Flyer getting an upgrade of its own. As for more current plans, it seems as if the Motorola Xoom -- a slate that was just recently updated to 3.1 -- will see another point increase in the coming weeks, which should give us a solid indication of what to expect software-wise with the MediaPad drops a few months later. Speaking of which, both CNET and M.I.C. Gadget were on-hand in Singapore for a look at the show-floor model of that very tablet, and you can feast your eyes on the pictorial proof down in the source links below.

Pic mine up tomorrow - HELL took MTN 1.5 weeks to sort my app out AND i have been with them for 8 years!! First app cancelled then REDONE then canceled then system problem and backlog!! OH well... I hope LEAF offer the free upgrade as it WAS designed for V3 of Android they were just taking tooooo long to polish it! I wonder if HTC and MTN are the same company??? hahahahaha

There's problems with MTN's new application system. I had to wait 5 days to pick up my phone... bastards :p
 
Yeah they said the same and I waited week and a half but have it now. I am more than happy so i hope th OS is updated soon :)

Just got notification from MTN of an update, taking it to version 2.something. Not the Honeycomb upgrade, that will have to wait...
 
Does the 3G version automatically come with wifi?
 
Just some extra info for you guys, once you root your Flyer you will now also be able to make phone calls from the device! :-)

Also, there is a version of Skype that has been out for quiet awhile now that allows you to make video calls.

didn't know about the root option, been using Skype for a couple of weeks, bit buggy with the video occasionally but very good otherwise
