I've been using WM since release, and CE before that. I have many years of experience as a power user, including on networks and WANs, and haven't found a problem.

Perhaps you're not aware that those are all old stories/rumours from last year. The Russian Twitter leak was accidental and erroneous, and retracted. The alleged HTC Support statement has been retracted. There's a lot of discussion about it on knowledgable forums, and a call to HTC Europe (HQ in England) will verify.

Searches and links are easy, and I s'pose Google's pretty good at finding things. But it doesn't have a bulldust detector. Maybe you haven't noticed yet, but there's quite a lot of erroneous information on the internet. Long-time users (my internet usage antedates the web) with common sense realise that third-party reports -- especially those that run counter to precedent (and HTC have almost never done a WM version upgrade for their devices) -- should be taken with a pinch of salt. You took hearsay as a promise, which is naive. One last thing: I know several people directly involved in WM7 (shouldn't it now be WP7?) development in Redmond, including several in the unit's management, so I don't have to rely exclusively on the rumour mill.

as much as I agree with all the things that Arthur and everyone else is saying (on my 3rd WinMo phone), I am very highly disappointed by what WinMo 7 is chalking up to be... Why is MS destroying the largest application base avaliable for any phone?

@MR Andersen: If you are that unhappy with your HD2, I will gladly take it off your hands, and give a proper phone a proper home...

As you doubtless know, there are lots of ROMs circulating on XDA-Dev. I installed the HTC-issued 1.66 WWE (off XDA Dev Leo), after a HardSPL - my SA-purchased phone wouldn't take the 1.66 ROM without HardSPL. The ROM itself fixes some HTC Sense and HTC apps glitches, particularly in HTC Messaging -- the WM messaging itself is rock solid, but it's the HTC front-end in Sense that had some niggles in 1.43 and 1.48. The 1.66 ROM also includes all the hot-fixes issued by HTC. I've also found that location awareness (for Sense Weather, etc) is much more robust and reliable in 1.66.

Sidebar for non-WMers: Please note that it's not WM that's got issues. It's the HTC front-end apps that makes calls to WM. WM got a bad name because the UI is rather dated, coming as it does from the Pocket PC days of a decade ago, with stylus. But remember, the UI is NOT the operating system, just the visible part we interact with. In all the areas that really matter to performance and reliability, WM as an operating system is rock solid, with by far the richest API set, services, power management, and so on. Yes, it was designed for a very different hardware generation of 10 years ago -- it was a real tech leader -- when non-volatile memory was thirty times the price it is today, and mobile CPUs and batteries and ROM/RAM were wimpsih by today's standards. Without exception in any function, service, subsystem you care to choose, WM is richer, more capable, easier to program, and more stable than anything else out there. There's no doubt the world has moved on to a new smartphone paradigm, led by Apple (though they didn't invent any of the technologies) but WM more than holds its own in every area other than the UI. These days many people seem to prefer a pretty face to real character under the skin.

Your rush to judgment exacerbates your public display of ignorance. The SMS issue on HD2 has absolutely nothing to do with Windows Mobile -- the problem lies with HTC Sense and the HTC Messaging app that unreliably talks to WM. Did you install the HTC-issued fixes (there have been three, the first two withdrawn)? No-one who uses the WM Messaging app itself has any issues whatsoever. Another case of blaming the messenger (excuse pun) when the fault actually lies elsewhere.
 
Received my Htc HD2 today.
Very impressed.
Does anyone know of a Cape town store where a pouch could be purchased for this rather large phone.

One of my mates got the HD2 on Friday and now I am definately sold! The HD2 is my next phone! It's absolutely awesome!

Where'd you get it? I'm looking for one on Vodacom.

As for accessories, I find eBay to have the best variety - and cheap - and arrives in one to two weeks.
 
Arthur, what version of Garmin software have you got loaded as I chatted to a sales guy at Vodacom and he told me the only Garmin solution available for the HD2 is the new "online" software whereby MTN updates the maps as you travel guess its great if you always in range of the network but not sure its so great if you outside of SA so am hoping that I can purchase the "old" Garmin Mobile software and then the seperate maps, can you shed some light on this for me.

Speaking of which - has anyone got this device on Vodacom in Cape Town? :(
 
the rep from leaf came yesterday to our shop to drop of 2 HD2 demos, its looks really awesome except for the bit too large screen even though its very thin. Its seems like they are trying to save there asses here in SA since they are almost to the point of closing down

Hi OffRoad. I have Garmin Mobile XT Version 5.00.20wp. It works perfectly on the HD2, and all maps are on the microSD card. No web access required when navigating.
 
Hi Arthur. Thanks for the info really appreciated, now at least I know what to go looking for.
