Hi Guys

I am due for an upgrade with MTN in the next 2 weeks.

I am looking at maybe getting an HTC Hero to replace my iPhone 3G.

What are your thoughts, would this be a worthwile move

Another thing is can we get the white version in SA through MTN?

I see they only show the picture of the brown one on their site.

Thanks :D

Definitely a good move. But you might want to have a look at the up coming Motorola Miltestone and also the very sleek Nokia X6 with above average 5mp camera.

Great move!! ;)
The girl from Vodacom told me that they only get the brown one..
Also I've heard that the white one actually turn yellow after some time:wtf:

Thanks for all the replies :)

I just saw a pic of someones HTC Hero turning yellow, scary

They say it can turn other colours as well if you keep it in your pocket :(

I think the brown would be better, I am on the MTN waiting list here for the phone so will see when they get stock.

It also looks really difficult to find a cover for it, I have over 5 covers for my iphone and can only find an invisible shield in SA for the Hero

from lab88 guy at vodaworld - the only white hero available in sa was in the custom free section at ORTIA - and wont be covered under warranty by LeafSA... pity there was no black, i think that would be cooler than the brown

invisible shield for hero... more details please

The invisible shield looks like a clear plastic film that fits the hero perfectly

I have seen one on an iphone before and it looks like it will protect it from scratches, not drops though :)

I just got a call from MTN and they will get stock on Monday so I will have to make a serious choice by next week

I really like my iphone's mp3 player, how does the hero stack up to it with regard to the playback of music?

Thanks guys

Ooh sound is really good with my Sennheiser cx 300's
Never even tried the original headset though.

And the player itself is also very good with nice search functions, album art and sorting

When it comes to music quality you cannot beat Nokia. Even their non-XpressMusic models have extremely accurate frequency reproduction.

I used to have the 5800, and the HEro is just as good.
Though, you are right about that, especially with the latest XpressMusic phone.
(Believe it's the 'Comes with Music' one).

The X6 is extremely intruiging. If only it were Android-based.

Personally, I'm sick of Symbian. But one has to give Nokia credit - it has lasted a while..

With the biggest market share and least resource requirements its gonna stick around for a long time to come. Looks a lot better than BlackBerry and their Windows 3.1 submenus :p

brown? my brown one looks pretty black. spose in sunlight it looks a bit metallic copper

+1 "Granted, target users are not all about the eye-candy but this kind of attitude from RIM must be getting too much. Just because a person has a busy life doesn't necessarily mean that they are blind or will put up with any old Windows 3.11 crap on their 2010 smartphone screen."

I hear the performance is slightly sluggish on the Hero compared to an iPhone 3g

Is this correct?

I would also like to find out if we can get the updated firmware in SA for this phone. It looks like the updates really add some speed to the device

How do you update the firmware for the Hero anyway?

Thanks :D

there were some very early reviews of early shipped heroes being a bit sluggish

but definatley not anymore

if you get brave enough to root your phone, you can put the most incredible high speed roms on the phone too

Cool as I am incredibly impatient and even my iphone is getting a little slower, damn 3.0 update :(

Can I update without rooting for now, maybe an official release or something or are we waiting for the 2.1 update?

we still waiting on 2.1 . could be any day now. the hero you buy today is STILL good on 1.5
