The power button is, annoyingly, on the top of the phone and is frustratingly hard to reach. However, HTC diminishes the need to reach it by providing simple gestures to wake (double tap) or unlock (swipe up) the phone when the screen is off.
The gestures still require that you lift the phone first - so they haven't really diminished the need...especially when the phone is lying on your desk and you want to check the screen. I made a post earlier about it here. Other than the lack of a dedicated button on the face of the phone - it's brilliant :).

Can't you just double-tap it while it's lying on the table? My Nokia Lumia's had double-tap to wake for a while and it works without having to pick the phone up. Seems silly to have to pick it up to do that.

There's a small window of opportunity once the screen goes off to double-tap it, but after about a minute I have to lift it up again (as per that screenshot setting) to swipe or doubletap to turn it on. It's a bit of a pain, but something that could easily be sorted via a software update or possibly an Xposed module? Unless there's a setting I've overlooked somewhere.

Htc makes beautiful phones and i would switch to them in a heartbeat. They do need a kick up the ass thou, htc doesnt do enough marketing and have pathetic product support locally.I honestly think that warranty claims with orange on a M8 will be stress free compared to getting it fixed locally by htc.I am not impressed by contract pricing on the M8 either, they need to be more affordable on contract to gain local marketshare. They also need to have premium warranty plans which include getting a cracked screen fixed free of charge as aswell as water damage.Htc offers premium warranties in USA.Finally they also need to bring in decent midrange handsets to the SA market :

That huge lower front bezel though. Deal breaker for me.

Yep was a very silly move,I used to be a fan of the Htc One m7 besides the camera and relatively big bezels(Yes I know the Xperia Z1 also has large bezels but they are there for a reason, waterproof).

I was really hoping they would modernise the successor with slim bezels and decent camera and maybe add some waterproofing but alas they have done non of the above and have even gone as far as using some of the screen real estate for the buttons which is a move backwards IMO, and it has even affected the aesthetics of the phone by making it longer.

I just dont have any interest in this phone at all because of these reasons.

And trust me - NOTHING will feel better in your hand and make you think 'wow I love this phone' every time you pick it up....

I disagree. My OnePlus One makes me think that.
