P3300 GPS - a warning / be careful

Hi,

Okay, so all the advertising from Vodacom and staff say that it comes with a GPS + Navigation software. Which technically is true. What they don't tell you is that Vodacom didn't get the South Africa maps with the phones from Leaf. So, you have to shell out R741 for the maps.
The GPS can only work with maps (can't use it as a plain GPS like a Garmin).

I got my P3300 on Friday 18th Jan, and this morning managed to get hold of someone from Leaf who confirmed that my phone (gave EMI number) was one of these "discount" ones bought by Vodacom.

I've had "words" with Vodacom this morning, and they are going to see what they can do. I'll post here once I've heard more.

Will let you know.

Sotfware

Hi,

It comes with TomTom Navigator preinstalled. My other issue is that it allows me to uninstall it (which I am NOT going to do), but there is no CD, so how would I reinstall it? Sheesh.

Easy. forum.xda-developers.com

You can pm me for more info. I have a P3300 running TomTom navigator 6 AND Garmin Mobile XT. Both with South African maps. On the whole, I don't have too may problems.

Very nice phone and highly customisable.

If you have the South African version, it should have Navigon pre-installed. Honestly I am in 2 minds (which is why I have both) - Garmin has a nice look and feel but TomTom is way more functional - very much a Windows (Garmin) vs. Linux (TomTom) situation.

Good luck.

I also have TomTom navigator 6 installed, with SA maps.....I got another one called Handymap AI GOLD as backup.
You can also try http://www.pda4x.com/ Lots of resources!

Greedyfly, what's your maps version? 660? I always wanted to try out Garmin.

heck i don't know :-)

doesnt really matter as I am trying out the software for now. I'll look to get the latest version if I will be using Garmin.

Should probably give Handymap a go sometime

Hi,

So, after much digging and scratching of heads, and frustrations, I got the maps to work on the phone. PM me if you need some information.

(Thanks to greedyflyza for pointing me in the right direction). took about 3 hours, but got it working. Got it to navigate me to work this morning and it works perfectly..

Which software did you go with? I used Garmin this morning.. got me here and it looks nice but I'm not impressed with the nuts and bolts behind the nice UI

Software

Hi,

I've got the TomTom Navigator 6 installed, with SA Maps. Very user friendly. Also easy to find "goodies" on the web. I downloaded some fun voices - Homer, Dr Evil and Kitt so far. But then work got in the way so had to stop playing. :)

Htc P3300

I got the HTC P3300 and cannot use the TomTom software cause there's no SA Maps for it. Geocacher, can you please help me with this as I saw in one of you postings you manage to get it to work on your phone. Thanks:)

Go to the forum I mentioned above and look for tomtom maps.

I went to the forum you (cyberarmy)suggested. But still can't find any SA maps for my phone.

Do you have website address or link to where the maps actually are for download?

can you run tomtom and navigon. and how do i get the tomtom software back on the phone.

OK, firstly I owned an I-mate K-Jam equivalent (Same CPU, RAM, ROM and Screen resolution to your 3300).

I copied the Navigator folder out of the phone and backed up on my PC. Then I upgraded the ROM, Reinstalled Tomtom again and overwrite new folder with old files (So I won't loose my favourite POI, recent visited places.etc).
I don't use Navigon, but TomTom Navigator and Handymap AI Gold.

NO. You should have backup the old ROM or TOMTOM folder before you attempted the WM6 upgrade.
