HTC Touch HD Contract

Ok, my number got ported last night. I have received a couple of calls and I can already say this phone is miles ahead of my TyTn regarding voice clarity and quality.

The phone has an on-screen slider (obviously to rip off the iPhone) where you slide left to answer and slide right to hang up. I can see how this won't work if you're using a third party app to lock the phone (you'd need to unlock the screen first). I don't see myself needing a different method to lock my phone as I seem to be carrying the phone in my top pocket rather than my pants pocket. I'm definitely looking for a good belt pouch though, but not one that costs $49 ;)

My phone was charged yesterday before the port so I'll report on the battery life throughout the day.

Thanks :-)

How about taking the phone near your face and the sensor switches off the display. What happens if if you remove your face?
How is potrait mode when sms'ing?

Any other irritating stuff you picked up?

I actually like the fact that the screen turns itself off. It was a habit I had to get used to to preserve battery life on my TyTn. A bit annoying when you need to "press 1", but the screen turns on fairly quickly. As far as I've read you can turn the feature off, though I haven't bothered looking.
SMS'ing in portrait mode is fine, though I can see that landscape would have more advantages. I've gotten used to the keyboard now, and can type an sms with 2 fingers. The predictive text seems pretty good.

As for battery life, my phone was unplugged at 6:30pm on Monday. The phone says I've talked for 1 hour 22 minutes, and I used the GPS yesterday for a 1h30 trip and my battery has just started warning me that it is low, so overall not bad. I'll try and resist the temptation to play with it today and see what the battery life is just receiving phone calls.

No other irritating things to report. Guess I'm still in the "glee" phase ;)

Sounds good to me. If it wasn't for the horrible battery I would have opted for the Diamond.

If when you answer a call and the screen goes off, if you pull out the stylus, the screen comes on with an open notepad page and with the call details. Can be usefull. Once you have turned the screen on this way during a call, it also stays on.

MTNSP told me April for the HD
Before I ported to Voda I phoned a couple of places & asked at many stores. Most people just took a wild guess (though tried to disguise it with an authoritive tone). I got through to one credible person who said at the end of Jan that they were expecting a test device at the end of Feb. He then said it takes about 3 months to authorise the phone for distribution and get stock so I shouldn't expect it before June. At that point I was ready to sign up with Nashua ;)

Nice tip! I see Duttys new rom has the new Manilla (TouchFlo 3D) which supports landscape! I might just flash that when it gets more stable

Hows the reception, Glipsie?
I can't say that I've really taken note of the reception. I see I have full reception now but I would expect that from the towers around Sandton ;).

New ROM.

Let us know when you flash Dutty's ROM and how it went etc. I am also keen but a bit apprehensive.

How stable is the OS in general? When flipping through pics I noticed some big slowdowns on a Nokia 71 if there are lots of pics? Same here?

Just to throw spanner. Words going round that the Palm Pre is coming out in March. Dunno bout SA but that phone was on top of my list next to the HD.

:-(

The last two days I've been using my phone conservatively, basically just phone calls. Battery is currently sitting at ~65%. Quite impressed.

I haven't got a lot of photos on the phone, but I'll make some time over the weekend to add some. I can see how that would slow down the picture viewer though (which feels a bit sluggish anyway). Though I don't see a point in it, other than trying to be fancy. Why not just open "Pictures & Videos" and see thumbnails of everything?

SA generally doesn't see new phones till 3 months after they were released. The HTC Touch HD was released on the 6th of November and I could only get it this month (well, Nashua had it since the 17th of Jan but I wouldn't really want to sign with them). So expect the Palm end April beginning June

Very true.
I ditched the Pre as the due date at that time was Dec 09. Now that it's coming much earlier than I expected...I dunno.

Hey Glipsie, load HD Tweak ( http://montecristoff.webs.com/ ) and Advanced Configeration Tool ( http://www.touchxperience.com/ ) - I run them side by .
side with zero problems.

I have significantly increased both speed of device and battery power with these apps (mainly through HD Tweak, though).

Give them a bash, you won't be dissapointed.

Oh, I love this phone!!!

Sounds like the HD is still the phone to get... I just REALLY would love to know what Vodacom is charging R11 999 for a phone that is selling for R5280 in the world markets...

Oh well, Wouldn't be SA if we weren't being ripped off hey...

i was wondering the same thing. i'm with mtn direct and according to them they won't launch the phone as a deal (meaning no pay in) any time soon. I may have to port out at the end of my contract...
