HTC Touch HD vs Iphone ?

Not sure about this whole Frankenstein angle of yours. What are you implying by it? Surely taking an iPod and turning it into a cellphone is more Frankenstein than anything the other companies have done?

You could say that, but cramming everything into one small device without focusing on its functionality or purpose makes it more of a Frankenstein device, this is what manufacturers are forced to do since people believe the more features a device has the better it will be.

Apologies to the OP as we are sort of taking this of topic... but I am all for features if it does all of them well. Why not? Why settle for one thing if you can get all in one. And yes I hear what you are saying about it not doing any of them well but let me use my N95, soon to be N82, as an example.

  • With Garmin XT loaded it works as well as a standalone Garmin Nuvi unit or other GPS device.

The camera is often reviewed and shown to be as good as most point and shoot digital cameras on the market today. In fact I post photos online and people often ask what camera I am using because of the results.

The music player is perfect for my needs and in fact after using my gfs iPod I cannot tell much difference.

I recently recorded some video footage and played it back on my TV. It was definitely DVD quality as advertised.

And this is besides all the other little bells and whistles I have occasion to use. Now why would I not choose a phone such as this instead of buying a GPS unit, a camcorder, a digital camera and an MP3 player?!? This one unit performs all those functions perfectly!

EDIT : And why would I choose an iPhone? What does it do that my current phone can't? And this is a genuine question as I think I must be missing something. And I am aware of the touch screen and it is cool but not top of my priority list. in fact someone at work the other day had a touch screen and when I put it to my ear i inadvertently pushed some buttons!

So get the n82 then? I'm not insisting that the iPhone is better, for me the UI and player suits my taste.

Apple is all about marketing in my eyes!

I am yet to own one of their products but all you hear it people talking about iPods (even though there are better mp3 players out there!), iMacs (give me a PC any day!) and now iPhones although from what I can tell, and have read, it is far from being the best phone on the market!

Touch screen seems to be the only "big new thing" it brought to the market or am I missing something...?

Dude - you are like a saint to me :D. Finally someone that calls an apple a fruit :p!

Touch screen phones are the next big fad, but I'm guessing it is a fad that will stick (like slider phones). However, there are people out there that do not sit behind a desk all day and they love the durability of monoblocks with buttons.

If the touch screen craze tickles you then I would seriously urge you to rather get a phone that has wokring bluetooth, can mms, take videos, requires less hacking, has a better display and is basically a more open device - like these fine examples :

HTC : http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_touch_hd-2525.php
Sony Ericsson : http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_x1-2246.php
LG : http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_kc910_renoir-2495.php
Samsung : http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i900_omnia-2422.php
And the soon to be announced : http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_5800_xpressmusic_previewed_and_pictured_seems_cool-news-603.php which while have a bigger and better brother coming soon.

While this cram-it-all-in approach is true from some phones I think you need to look at the electronics industry as a whole and the evolution that takes place in it. Integration is the key factor here and as more and more features are being put into single chips you will find devices that are more and more capable. Yet on lower end devices I must admit it can feel like a Frankenvibe.

But - exceptions are a way of life and if you look at the Nokia N-series you will see that the focus is on portable multimedia computing. Every feature of N-series phones take this into account when it is put together. That is why on a device such as the N82 you will find every small feature of it has that philosophy. The camera is excellent, the sound is deep, clear and moves you, the GPS is accurate and the operating system is powerful and allows you to run industry leading software like Garmin Mobile XT for example.

So yes - I know where you come from with the Frankenstein thing - but just keep in mind there are exceptions.

Just giving it a name doesn't make it so... there is nothing "HD" about the screen res. It's the same as the SE XPERIA X1.

Yes it is - but it is still ahead of the Nokia 5800 and Samsung Omnia (and lets not forget everyones favorite fruit).

Spoke to an HTC PM at a distie. Looks like HTC Touch HD comming end Nov 08. he currently has a demo unit and says prelim testing looks pretty good. Especially impressed with screen size and connectivity speeds !!

Why do you say odd phone call on Iphone ?? Is it not a good phone ? i heard about SMS issues ...people not able to reply to SMS's etc. i hope with the new Iphone those issued are adressed.

thanks for the feedback!

Ibeivan, did you maybe get a suggest retail on the HTC touch HD?!

...cuz it sounds like its prob going to be more pricey than the 'fruit'.

suggested retail would be between R5500 and R6499 .... but anything can happen especially with the R/$ exchange ...might go up ...might come down ...

I would choose the Apple 3G iPhone over the HTC Touch HD any day of the week & twice on Sunday. :)

HTC will just never be as cool as Apple + the design of the iPhone is light years ahead of anything else on the market.

A reviewer for GSM Arena summed it up well : HTC created the 3D Touchflo as a band-aid over the crappy Windows Mobile interface.

Just my 2c.

How much do you drink on Sundays then ? :D

Since when has a communication tool been measured in "cool" ? Experts measure in features/rand. And no, while seriously lacking in many areas, the iPhones interface is SLIGHTLY ahead of the rest. Not light years - and the new S60 FP5 Taco is on its way so that should put an end to this slight lead.

That may be so, but you forget one big thing. The market leader Symbian and their new Taco flavored joy machine... ;)
