HTC TyTN II (Codename: Kaiser)

Yes I saw the same thing. But why does other applications works smoothly? The only application that lags is Handymap. That just tells me that it is a software issue on Handymap's side, not anything to do with the WM6 or the TyTn2

I agree - Tomto is very smooth and I prefer the interface - think I am going to stick with it for the moment. The Handymap are also starting to fall behind with their updates - I have found numerous places where the Tomtom maps are much more up to date than the Handymap ones (April 2007).

Hi chaps

Im trying to get this right, I want a TyTN II, but not sure how the whole maping thing works.

Im assuming i have to buy the maps for my location, will these then be one file loaded on the phone, or do i have to stream the map data as a drive?

Thanks

The TyTn II has a built-in GPS. You purchase software of your choice that provide the maps. This can either be downloaded on to your PC and transferred, downloaded straight to your phone, or purchased on Micro SD card and installed straight on to your phone from there.

You get maps for specific areas like KZN, or the whole of SA, USA ow wherever else.

There is a GPS software (name escapes me at the moment) that will stream as you use it, but this is inferior in my mind.

Handymap works the best ... Garmin has a PDA version but nobody @ garmin sa has clue about it. what a shame

I just installed Handymap on mine and am not impressed. I think it may be the device but the thing only updates every 10 seconds, which means, when streets are close together I keep missing my turn. I tried mapking which came with it (since I bought it in Bangkok) and that did the same thing, only every 10 seconds. Is that normal? Would TomTom be any better or is there a way to increase the updates. I used a standard GPS before and it updated every second.

There seem to be a few people with exactly the same problem as you, me included. I cannot find a setting to increase the "refresh" rate with the result that I have opted to go with Tomtom 6 Navigator. I prefer the Handymap interface, but the refresh issue is a problem to me as well.

I am currently using TomTom Navigator 6.030 (8320) and South Africa Maps v660.1290

Is there a place where I can get a trial before buying? I don't see anything on their site.

Yip it is the way the hardware works on the device. The NMEA stream for some strange reason gets fed in short bursts.
You will get the same prob with any other software.
Personally I think it works decently for a what it is, it cant really compare to a SIRF III GPS chip. For personal use it is quite decent

It doesnt havea SIRF III chip? That sucks... Probably as bad as the E90 then.

That sucks. I was actually going to try get the Eten m800 with SirfStarIII but thought "how much worse could this one be?" Oh well, too late now...

I can't believe that it can only update every 10 seconds. There must be some way. I think I'll download an overclocking app and nuke the hell out of it to try get it faster. I really find the GPS terrible if you're lost and have to drive at 20km/h so that it can refresh before the turn comes.

That means, at 120km/h... you would have travelled 333.33m by the time you get an update, right?

Update the voicepack to the following : "You should have turned right", "Please take the previous offramp", etc.

Tomtom 6 updates about every second or two on phone phone and gives you plenty of warning. I have never come close to missing a turning even of those "turn left and immediately right" types. There is no lag to speak of.

You cannot download a demo - with the problems I have had with some of the other softwares I downloaded a cracked version, installed and tested it. I am happy with it and will purchase it with the newer maps - SA ver 6.8 is available according to their website (had a look today).

I've also just downloaded a cracked version to test before buying. I wish they had a demo. The crack was a lot harder to get :P

By the way, what should the microSD card be formatted as (FAT, FAT32, NTFS)? I'm having a lot of problems and it's currently FAT (as it came with the phone). Also, does the phone have to be off everytime I want to swop cards or can I swop as I feel (set to quick-removal)?

EDIT: Ok, I've formatted as FAT32 and seems to work. Also, found out it is hot swappable.

EDIT 2: So the FAT32 still didn't help as card got corrupt a couple of hours later. It only happens when trying to copy to it from pc or installing a CAB from card. Very F****ing irritating. Anyone else had these problems?

Ok, tested TomTom6 and it's a MILLION TIMES BETTER than Handymap. It refreshes twice a second so I haven't missed one turn. Voice commands are on time and accurate. It's got a lot of extras which we can't use in this country (or at least on the cracked version I'm testing) like traffic routing so if there's congestion on one road, it routes you another way. Pity.
The only thing I found that it didn't have that handymap did was speedtraps under POI. Then again, I only played with it for a little while so I might have missed it.

I'm definitely buying TomTom. The refresh rate just makes it.

To all you yall that have tried the Handymap app ...

What com port did you use and more importantly what BAUD RATE did you use?????

BAUD RATE 115200 is the optimal setting ...

Do you mean changing the BAUD rate from the "external GPS" settings? If you do, mine doesn't allow any change. It defaults back to 4800 everytime. And I can't find any settings to change under Handymap. Maybe I'm just being blonde.

Sounds like you have to default settings enabled.
you need to go to the normal map view in the Handymap application ( not Navigation mode ) tap tools - gps/track.
the default setting would be on auto detect. change this to By User and change the BAUD RATE from 4800 to 115200 ... it should make a notable difference.

How do I switch to the application itself from the navigation mode?

I really would like to try to sort this out. I believe I have tried this before and it defaults back to 4800. I am prepared to try again though...

Ok - sorted out. Close GPS and it takes you back to the app.

Will try the higher setting - Mine was on 57400 or so.
