HTC Universal launch date?

South Africa normally releases HTC phones under the iMate brand.
The HTC Universal is the 1st 3G windows mobile phone afaik
 
I would have preferred an update to the PDA2k with 520hz processor, VGA, 3G and 1.3M camera, 802.11g, WM2005.

That would have dominated, but I guess I will still go with the clamshell Universal (Imate 2005).
 
You don't need to use it in 'clamshell' mode but can use it in 'PDA' mode like the i-mate. Obviously then you won't use the keyboard.

I intend to use the Universal as a 'mini-notebook', supplementing my 6680.

Currently I carry a laptop with 3G card, i-mate, 6680 and Blackberry. Need to reduce this. Plan to use the Universal to do this.

Hmmm follow the sound of a metal detector - that's where you will find v3g...:D
 
Sounds a bit geeky, but these things don't take up that much space anymore. The chargers are more of an issue. I've started using USB chargers for the phones.

I believe technology should evolve to the point where you can carry everything in one device, replacing your wallet, phone, pc, tv remote, home phone, tv itself, etc.

Basically, if you're stuffed if you loose this one device, you know you achieved the 'one-device' dream. :)

The Universal is an important step on this path.

I'd like to see:

- Better CPU (Centrino 1.4G+ levels)
- Lots of RAM, at least 512Mb
- Good battery life
- Higher resolution screen, something like 1024x768
- Proper keyboard
- Full Java support
- Every radio you can think of, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA
- Support for UPnP (to manage your multimedia)

Not going to get into the OS debate!

1.2kg with everying that opens and shuts (except for an optical drive). It even has a SIM slot, so you can make phone calls using the laptop. No 3G support though, but there is a PCMCIA slot, as well as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It has a fast CPU, great battery life (all things considered) and doubles as a Tablet Type laptop. It's only 31mm thick, and 235mm x 135mm on the sides. No that HAS to be an option?!?

Oh, and my personal point of view: One man's "all-in-one device" is another man's "eggs in one basket". At least at the moment, if my telephone is lost, I can still use the Internet. If everything is in one device, I lose the whole shebang in one easy step! Maybe V3G's metal detector-hurting list of toys isn't THAT bad, eh?
 
I believe that the latest version of the Flybook has supports 3g , though im not sure when it will be released in SA

Looks like a decent sub-notebook - there are plenty to choose from. I'd like to see you carry that on your hip though ;p

HTC is a PDA/GSM Phone which is a different class. The SIM slot is pretty cool I must say. I reckon its primarily for data though.

Yup that would rock - consolidation is the way forward. Also needs built in GPS. Location based services are the future.

Don't reckon full Java will happen. But I don't see why Sun can't release a WM2005 version themselves. You can upgrade the memory to 2GB (soon 4GB) using SD but built in would be better. Also you can get bigger battery packs (it just adds bulk).

I certainly hope they fix Bluetooth in the Universal - gdammit the stacks for WM2003 on the PDA2k are just so flaky.
 
I've looked at both the Universal and the Flybook (Actually handled the latter). My personal choice is still the Universal, all things (including price) considered.

BTW, news from UK is that 2 networks will be releasingthe Universal in there various forms 1 September (Orange being one of them) so it shouldn't be long before it's here.
 
I reckon Vodacom will release it Jan 2006 on contract. (complete speculation of course) :p

If you want to cough up the 10k or whatever then you can get it next week.
 
v3g, why not get hold of one of the suppliers? There is one in Midrand that I know has them...
