Hi guys :). I got my HTC Wildfire about 2 weeks ago and so far I'm really happy with the phone. It fits my budget perfectly. In using it I've noticed some things that I wouldn't mind having clarified, so I thought I'd make a list of stuff to ask and post it here. In no particular order:

1. It comes with HTC Sense. I love the HTC widgets, but not the homescreen. Is there ANY way at all to use their widgets with another home replacer?

2. I've heard that even if you use another home, there's still a lot of Sense stuff running in the background, slowing the phone down. Is this true, and can it be disabled?

3. Is it just me, or are the majority of widgets available for android butt ugly? Sort of like the "pretty" looking gnome/kde themes on gnome-look. It's flashy but really poor design. Incoherent, badly spaced etc etc. Or just plain ugly.

4. What do you guys do about paid-for apps here in SA?

5. Know of any actually nice clocks available for free on the market? See 3

6. Sometimes my alarm just doesn't trigger (eg. if I set it for 3mins from now, sometimes it will ring, sometimes NOTHING happens). This is obviously very very bad. Some people say it's just the volume. That doesn't seem to be the case here

7. Oh yes, is FroYo available for the Wildfire in SA? I've only managed to find international news articles, but haven't looked /that/ hard, admittedly

8. I use a control bar that lets you enable/disable your data connection by renaming the APN's. If I leave it off for too long, it doesn't reconnect without a reboot which takes way too long. Any ideas?

Either way I'm loving Android. It reminds me a lot of Linux in the sense that there's a ton of cool ****, but not everything is always supported, and a lot of 3rd party programs just lack that sense of _polish_

on 8. I find the stock data connection switch works well hey, got that APN thingy installed, but have yet to use it

You can't run Sense widgets without Sense... makes sense? :p

On 6. - running a task killer? Don't...

On 1-8, root.

Ok, kidding.

1. I don't know, but Launcher Pro is not bad.
2. Root. If you want to uninstall. I don't think it slows it down much.
3.
4. Root + Market Access app - emulates sims with access
5. Alarm clock plus v2.
6. +1 on the don't use a task killer for anything. Thats most probably your problem.
7. Root + custom rom
8. Never had an issue on the desire. Maybe its also task killer related. Takes a few seconds. Like two.

Right, it seems task killers make more problems than they solve. I'll refrain from using it for a few days and see if any problems go away. I'm scared to root though. Not because I'm scared of bricking, but I can't afford to have the phone replaced if I void the warranty and end up actually needing it :/. Would you rate taking the plunge and rooting is actually worth it? And if you do install a custom ROM, don't they all have some problems of their own?

EDIT: what exactly do custom ROMs offer besides a newer version of Android if it isn't available in your country / for your manufacturer eg. HTC yet?

Custom ROMs usually give less bloated, streamlined and often themed versions of your chosen version of Android.

You shouldn't be using a task killer. Android is designed to deal with apps running in the background. So uninstall.

Custom roms for me is purely APPS2sd. Rooting also gives you some nice goodies.

Oh and if you looking for froyo, that's an awesome side effect

Swyped from my Leedroid HTC Desire

Is this phone ok,or is a total piece off crapp??
Want to buy one..

For the same price rather get the optimus one.

Sent from my GT-I9000 using MyBroadband Android App

Optimus one has larger screen faster processor and android 2.2. It goes for about 2500 a little less than the wildfire.

How much is that? I got the wildfire - fine for my purposes but it may be too slow for some. About rooting: is it worth the risk? Is there a risk? And what is a gold card?
What risk? Theres very very very little... you dont need a gold card if you have an unlocked phone. Had no problem with HTC's from MTN(unlocked)

got this phone 3-4 weeks ago, loving it glad I never got the LG or samsung, HTC is just WIN

OK just bought it,friend off mine got it 2 weeks ago on contract and sold it to me.
