Hi I would like to know if there are any good local sites and forums for HTPC enthusiast  in SA I currently only found international one's.I don't see a section in the forums for us HTPC users on MYBB yet too wondering if it could be added and see what our locals think of this new multimedia addition to our homes.

I think that's a great idea as there are a lot of HTPC people on MyBB already and there are always questions popping up in the hardware section about new HTPC setups.

I'm not aware of any South African HTPC enthusiast sites though

On a related note- I purchased the Cideko Wireless Keyboard/Mouse for my HTPC :)

We could always start a site for SA HTPC owners if people are interested?

I have an issue with HTPC's - they're just not worth it, money wise - unless you use it as a torrent/download box too.

IMO you might as well just get a PS3 - it's smaller, uses less power, has Blu-ray, can stream videos over your network.

That or something like the $99 Apple TV, which can also just stream any video.

I tend to disagree. You can also have liveTV and complete PVR functionality with EPG for similar or less money than a PS3.

Yeah I use my HTPC for a torrent/download box. I've also used it for a testing machine for new software etc, as well as a VPN server but that has now moved to my router

One of the main reasons I bought a HTPC, while owning PS3, was to be able to play any region Blu-ray movies.

that would be awesome! I find it a real struggle to find info specific to SA that's related to htpc stuff...like dstv on htpc (thanks vinodh for that link, will def check it out) or where to get htpc hardware in SA

Hi Guys,

As Vinodh pointed out earlier, for an HTPC related forum, focusing specifically on Windows Media Center, you can visit http://forum.mceguide.co.za or you can also visit our main website at http://www.mcesa.tv.

We provide support, products and services to the Windows Media Center market in South Africa since 2007, such as Windows Media Center compatible TV tuners, remote control kits and the EPG.

For more information, kindly visit our site or drop me a mail at [email protected]

Regards,

Franco

Hi guys,

I'm new to htpc's so don't know anything about them. I was wondering, could you use any old pc and turn it into a htpc? I have an old machine that's just lying around and wondering if it's possible into turning it into a htpc.

An HTPC is like any other enthusiast PC - say a gaming rig. It is something that is never quite finished and there is always another mod to make. It is best to start on an old (i.e. free) PC to work out what aspects matter most to you. Once you have some experience then you can better plan on how to spend money.

Pretty much. Its what I've done with a spare PC I had lying around. You can download XBMC or use Windows Media Centre (or other media centres). You may need to get yourself a new graphics card if you want HD though. HDMI connections also carry audio which is great.
