I am currently using this modem for my 3G internet which I currently use Vodacom (prepaid and costing a fortune). I will however soon receive my new 8ta sim.
Will this Modem work with the 8ta sim? How do I know if my modem is maybe locked to only be used with Vodacom and if locked how do I get it unloced?
Thanks

Yes, the E220 does work with the 8ta SIM. Keep in mind that you need to update the firmware to upgrade the speed to 7.2 Mbps. I use firmware version E220_11_1_.117.10.03.99 and I do not believe the hardware can support any higher speeds. You also need to download the 8ta Dashboard software from the 8ta website to ensure the right Windows drivers.

I bought my E220 from Vodacom and it was not locked. I have no further info about unlocking E220 modems: Maybe it is time to buy a new 21 Mbps modem rather than bother too much with an old E220.

Just try it, it may be worth it ! Good luck.

So I got my 8.ta 10gig SIM 2 days ago and I popped it into my My Vodaphone E220 - Got Nothing until I read this thread. So I flashed the E220 with firmware version E220_11_1_.117.10.03.99 and Downloaded 8ta Dashboard software from the 8ta website and low and behold it worked and more it is twice as fast as Neosnails CDMA network at a sixth of the price. I was as happy as a pig in Palestine until I compared my speed test with other 8.ta users.

My signal strength on HSDPA 98% is this the best I can expect on the Huawei E220 or is there a secret handshake that I don't know about

You are doing very well so far. The E220 is getting a bit old now and can only do 384 kbps max upload. 8ta has the E367 and E1820 for R699 and they both are rated at 21.6 Mbps Down and 5.76 Mbps Up. Both also support UMTS 900 if needed. Worth lookind at!

Donno if this will help you, but...

Took my modem to my mates place (E220). It worked but only with 1 bar of strenght. He decided to take 8ta either way, and get a booster kit.

He opted for the E173 modem, and when he plugged it in, he says he gets full signal and awesome speeds.

I am waiting for payday to get mine...

The E220 will work as a stopgap measure until you can get a more modern modem.

Don't throw the E220 away yet as it will work in areas with poor signal (EDGE coverage). And also as a backup.

The E220 only supports HSDPA on 2100MHz.

8.ta uses 900MHz and so you'll only get 3G service by roaming onto MTN.

If you are "roaming" on MTN you will not get access to the 8.ta special deals as they are for direct 8.ta connections only!

I concur. My E220 also connects at 3G speeds.

I think maybe he was thinking of cell c who operate on 900 Mhz...
