HUAWEI 5G CPE Pro - Battery Backup

Hi Guys

With Eskom showing now signs of letting us have a good weekend I need to make arrangements for when the Power does go off. I would like to keep the router up as long as possible and I use to have a battery back up on the B315 router before switching over to the 5G router.

Does anyone know what options are available to me to keep the router powered during loadshedding?
 
Just keep in mind, it could be that the RAIN tower does not have battery backup.
I know someone powered their router using the car's 12v socket. Perhaps first test with that during load shedding to make sure the tower has backup power.
 
Unfortunately the tower I connect to does not have battery backup as proven this morning. Rode past it on the way to work 05:00 whole area was without power.
 
I dont understand how they dont even have a simple inverter setup.

Thats very expensive equipment and the constant on and off is not good, never mind the power spikes
 
Rain 5G towers does not have battery backup unfortunately.

I'm lucky to be covered by 2 towers. Closest one is gets loadshed with my area. The secondary tower I catch follows my area time line for loadshedding so it switches between the two.

The cheapest most effective solution is this


Works out R540 and you are sorted. Get it from Communica. It's an auto switch psu so instantly switches to battery power when mains drop and auto switches back to mains when it comes back. Does not drop the power so it works exactly like UPS but a 12V solution so much more efficient.

This solution runs 3 routers for me.

1x Huawei Fibre ONT
1x Tenda AC10 router
1x Huawei H112 5G CPE

The 5G drops with power outages but the 4G stays a while on battery backup. I'm guessing the 5G equipment will drain the batteries too fast. Rain towers carry quite a bit of users. Remember Vodacom users roam on Rain towers too.
 
Wow found a link that estimates 2-6KW for a tower!


I am going to ask our building manager for the electricity useage for the towers on our roof to double check

Even more when they use Aircons for cooling and not air or other methods.....

Just glad there is some sort of redundancy. Wont have ADSL for much longer.

Yeah what are the speeds like though. Probably not good. The Indoor CPE does 4x4 mimo on 4G so I'm sure the ODU should too at least there is something.

Speed test above on 4G. Better than my old ADSL. But I have been spoilt over the last two weeks :cool:
 
I can attest to 5G not being available during loadshedding, the tower in my area went dead yesterday and only 4G was available on the router, however no internet connection

Yes 5G has no backup batteries at all they use the batteries for 4G only.

When 5G drops you need to restart the router or switch mobile data on and off in the CPE to get connectivity again. It does work on 4G fall back until those batteries die then no service.

Maybe @rpm or @Bradley Prior can ask Rain why they do not use the batteries in the towers for 5G? Sad because no power means no service unless you have multiple towers covering your area and loadshedding schedules differ.

Do I have to buy a male DC to DC cable separately, to connect my Rain 5G router to the unit? I'm guessing you just power the battery pack using the charger supplied with the router.

How do you connect the PSU to your routers? struggling to visualise this?
