Not sure if it's relevant, but which dashboard s/w and version are you using? [I assume VMC-Lite that was probably on the E170's emulated CDROM drive.]

I suggest trying ginggs' MDMA.

Problem solved - I just had to get in the car and drive to where there was a [data] signal.
