Huawei E220 on Windows Vista

The software updates from Huawei copy the installation files and drivers to the emulated CD-ROM device in your E220. You still need to run the installer on the emulated CD-ROM device, this will install the necessary drivers and the dashboard software.

Hello there and many thanks for your answer!!
I've already tryed that, but when i try to copy filoes into the emulated cd-rom drive, it flashes me an error that there is no free space on that drive, and if i try to delete any files from there, absolutely nothing happens!!
Do you have any other ideas??
Please help me!!!
Thanks in advance!!

You cannot manually copy or delete files on the emulated CD-ROM drive, that can only be done by the software update downloaded from Huawei.

I haven't ever tried installing the software for TMN in Portugal, but if you are still having trouble installing it, try downloading the software called 'Normal'. What do the technical support people for TMN in Portugal suggest? Perhaps they can test your card and make sure it is installed correctly.

@warcraft2003: Are you still having a problem with this?
Yes, I tried the method on the first page as I have a XP desktop...but I cant locate autorun and the XP drivers on the modem.
When you connect the E220 to the XP desktop does another drive letter appear in My Computer? If you browse to this new drive, you should see an autorun.exe and a setup.exe, double-clicking on either of these should start installing the dashboard software and the drivers.

Hello!!
I already tries to contact TMN's client support, but i haven't got a satisfactory answer from them!! They want me to pay, just to look at the device!!! I really have to do it by myself at home!!
I'll try to download the "Normal" software ant install it, and i'll give some feedback soon!!
Thanks!!

Are you sure your SIM is provisioned for data? Try putting that SIM in a mobile phone and accessing a WAP page.

Installing the dashboard software does not change the firmware. It does copy the dashboard installer to the emulated CD-ROM device though, if you want to avoid doing that, then extract the dashboard installer files from the ISO file that is part of the dashboard download.

@ginggs

Well I already updated my firmware including my dashboard files, I just want to replace the mtn dashboard with the new one.

When I download the huawei normal from that site it does have an iso in the rar file, I just want to use that instead of mtn's dashboard

Huawei E220 on Vodacom with MTN F@stnet software

Here is how I got the Huawei E220 3G/HSDPA for Vodacom to work (sort off) in Win(HastaLa)Vista(Baby):

(1) On an XP machine, install the firmware update for the Huawei E220 from http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=272898 where it is labelled F@stLink E220 Data Card Vista Driver. This will delete the Vodacom/Vodafone firmware and software on the modem - you have been warned!

(2) Still on an XP machine, copy the files on the modem (a storage device will appear under My Computer) to a new memory stick.

(3) Plug the Huawei modem into the Vista machine as well as the memory stick. Ignore all requests to let Windows look for a driver and install the MTN software from the memory stick.

(4) Set up a new profile in the MTN F@stLink software - just call it Vodacom, make "internet" the APN and use an empty username and password. The number to be dialled is *99# which is the usual.

Basically it now works - although I might have mixed up the order of things a but above. The key is (THIS IS IMPORTANT) that when you plug in the Huawei modem you should Cancel through all of Vista's requests to install new software. Just ignore all of it and when it's through, run the MTN F@stLink dashboard. It will ask for your PIN and let you connect.

This approach is of course not ideal - you get an ugly (sorry, ugly yellow and orange) MTN dashboard dialler and you have to Cancel a lot but at least it worked.

Hi, I tried installing a Huawei E220 modem on Windows Vista, only the emulated CD-ROM device was detected, not the modem device and the two COM devices.
When I tried to access the emulated CD-ROM device I got the message:

I found the following workaround here:

Worked fine for me, although it the emulated CD-ROM device is still reported as "corrupted and unreadable".
Definitely going to format that drive now!

Just a note. Apparently Vodacom SA is getting a lot of calls from users with HP Pavilion Notebooks complaining that even after upgrading firmware to the Vista-capable drivers, these notebooks do not detect nor work with the device.

I used the workaround above and it has installed it and its working fine. use the workaround with the Vista-capable firmware already loaded.

From what I can see these laptops dont identify the USB device correctly to Vista and it thinks its normal USB disk. as soon as you make it a composite usb device it goes off and finds drivers and installs them.
