confused:hi there

can someone please help me . My Huawei E220 3g vodacom prepaid modem , keeps connecting at a real slow speed , like 235.something kbs , and it used to connect at 7.2mbs, in the exact same spot, my problem started about 2 months ago. can someone tell met please where to start in getting this fixed ? i've tried connecting in different locations also, to no success. i'm situated in Pretoria Gardens, i've been connecting on this low speed for more than 2 months.
 
I had to change the connection string that the modem was using to force it to not use GPRS.
How are you connecting?

In the end, I replaced the software on the E220 with the latest version from Huawei themselves, and have not had to do any fancy stuff to get it to work properly since then.
 
when was the last time you upgraded the software and firmware?

i was using the software that came with the modem , but using the software i started to have problems staying connected, and still it connects on slow speed even if i use the software supplied, at this stage im connecting by going to my control pannel , and connecting via VMLITE. i updated the firmware about a month ago :-(
 
Have you tried using it on another USB Port?

Is the LED flashing Blue or Green when connected?

If it's Green then you are on EDGE and not 3G/HSDPA. Go into settings and try 3G Only connection and see if that fixes the problem...

You don't say where you are viewing the speed... Is it from the pop up box on the right when you connect?

thanks, uhm , yes i have tried different usb slots, even different Pc's, and the software that im using doesn't have the setting for me to choose, oh , and yes , its from the pop up box when i connect
 
Both VMC and VMC Lite have settings under network for forcing 3G only connection.

Or probably better still replace the VMC Lite with Huawei Mobile Partner: http://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads/Huawei/Huawei_E220 click on E220_Dashboard_WIN_HOSTB107D05SP00C03

You will need to manually add a profile which is simply fixed APN internet and dial string *99# and that's it!

If you don't want to do that use MDMA which is an excellent tool. Download it here: http://www.nerve.org.za/mdma/mdma10030a.zip

Ensure that you fully close VMC Lite, it's icon should not be showing at the right by the clock etc.

Then run MDMA - If you get a port in use warning then you haven't shut VMC down fully!!

You can change connection type, use it to send USSD commands and get a good idea on signal level and of course connect.

In some cases it can be quite useful. For example when VMCLite fails to work, you can fall back on VMCFull, and vice verca.

In that case would it not make sense to then just install VMC full?
 
Most of the times it's the firmware, update it as well, even if it's the same version.

No, no, no. If your firmware was corrupt, your modem wouldn't boot. Leave the firmware alone unless you are upgrading, and even then, only for a good reason.

For your information, I fix these modems as part of my living and I've seen tens of dozens of these in the past 3 years and it is possible for the firmware to prevent the ability to switch to 3g.
