I recently got a Huawei e3531 HSPA+ USB Stick to use as a 3G dongle. All seems to work fine and the sim card is registered and activated and I am getting a 3G signal.. but when I try connect to the dongle it asks me for a password . What password.. where do I find it ?

I am used to seeing a network security key printed on the bottom of a modem but where do I find the key for this dongle? If i take off the cover I see serial number.. IMEI number.. model number... but no security key ??

Weird, are you sure you are not trying to connect to someones wifi? Cause that is what that screen is from.

You are connected to MTN with the 3G stick, as it shows in the picture.

I don't get it either..

I am 99.9% sure that the device I am trying to connect to is mine.. when I unplug it, it is no longer available so thats a pretty good sign !

I have usual connectivity via ADSL router.. but as soon as I try connect to the 3G dongle (Huawei) then it prompts me for a password....

Nothing on the box except a sticker with IMEI number, serial number and ICASA sticker

If it's a USB stick you most don't need to connect to it's wifi? Your connection is over the USB stick itself.

You sure it's a stick you plug into the USB port?

Now I am doubting myself lol

Its a Huawei E3531 HSPA+ USB stick..

OK.. so if i dont need to actually connect to it to use it, what about when I want to connect a device other than the PC its plugged into ? So, for example, its plugged into my main pc.. but I also want to use the same connection for my smart phone. I then need to connect to it and it will prompt me for a password ? That bring us back to the same question.. what friggen password ?? lol

Plug it into your router (if the router supports USB modems). If it does, set your adsl router to USB 3g mode.

Update ..

So I can connect to internet without having to log onto the Huawei network.. looks like Supersunbird was right :)

But.. when trying to connect to the network from my smartphone it prompts me for a password..

That never gets old

Now back to the issue, go into settings on that website page, and chance the password for the wifi hotpot capability to whatever you want it to be!

Then goto settings ... and change the wifi password.

192.168.1.1 .. default user and password is admin.

just a heads up :

I have plugged the Huawei modem into a Tenda modem (via USB) and set up the Tenda as a 3G network... all works no problem and I can connect to the Tenda using the password I set up during configuration. So thats all sorted.. thanks to all how helped :)

I can also plug the Huawei direct into PC (not via Tenda) and use the connection.. no problem..

But.. say I go away and use the Huawei plugged into laptop and want to share that connection (eg connect smart phone to it).. then the Huawei would prompt for a password.. which I still cant find :p

I guess i could set the laptop up as a hotspot and connect any mobile devices via that ?

I checked up that dongle model number. It doesn't do WiFi. So I dunno what you're on about actually.

That could be a reason ... :p I assumed it did..

If not.. then what network is being displayed when I plug it in ? (see pic on post #3)

That displayed network is definitely created when I plug it in to my PC as it only appears when I plug it in and it disappears when I unplug it

It's not a WiFi network. It's a cellular network that you are seeing. Laptops with built-in cellular show something similar

Go into the network adapter folder. You will see it there also , with signal strength
