Huawei E620 and Toshiba laptop problem

Hi we have a E620 datacard that we want to use in a Toshiba M70-235 laptop. We installed the MTN software and inserted the card. The problem is when you run the MTN F@stlink program, it just says "detecting datacard" for a while and then "datacard invalid". I can, however, manually create a dial-up connection in Windows using the Huawei as the modem and setting the number to *99#. This works perfectly, it connects to the internet at the correct speeds, you can browse and download, no problem.

The problem is, the company has an APN that we use to connect to the company's internal network. So we need a way to set the APN and the username and password for the connection. Is there anyway to fix the MTN software on the Toshiba or set the APN in Windows, or maybe other software that we can use?

We have tested the datacard in a Mecer laptop and then the software works perfectly.
 
Try downloading the latest E620 software (released today) here:

Click on the filename E620 HOST01B113D04SP08C08(S. Africa MTN)
Please let us know if that solves your problem.

A workaround would be to add an extra initialization command in modem properties to set your desired APN, the command would be as follows:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"
Replace the text 'internet' with the name of your APN.

We updated the MTN F@stlink software with its update program a couple of days ago, that didn't work. The version number in the sysconfig.dat file (I think I saw it there) matches the one you provided above, but I will download it anyway to see what happens.

Changing "internet" to our APN gives an error, "couldn't connect to remote computer". I set all of our security settings for login correctly (CHAP authentication), but I don't think it even gets to authentication.

are you operating an apn or a vpn cause i hear you mentioning that ure setting ure own settings there....

It is an APN. I was talking about the login security settings you can set on the client side.

Someone is on holiday with the laptop at the moment, so I will post something as soon as I get my hands on the laptop again.
 
Sorry for the long silence, I only got my hands on the laptop again today.

I haven't managed to fix the problem yet. I downloaded and installed the E620 HOST01B113D04SP08C08(S. Africa MTN) version of the software from the Hauwei site, that didn't work.

I also tried the 2.0.3.0 driver that didn't work either...

I just ran ginggs' E620 tool and it says "Error initializing datacard"

Any ideas?

I managed to get it working. It is quite embarassing actaully - I downloaded PCMCIA drivers for the laptop :rolleyes: . In my defense, I always searched for updated drivers, these ones weren't exactly new (dated 2001) but they worked. Seems XP installed generic drivers that didn't work so well, the drivers I downloaded are aimed at the specific cardbus adapter.

It is working now, but after playing around a bit a few issues have arisen...

I must use the 2.0.3.0 drivers, otherwise we're back at 'data card invalid'. Also, after a restart the laptop, or do a cold boot, the first time I plug in the card the MTN software fails as before. I then have to 'safely remove' and unplug the card and replug it. From there it works...

So there are stil some issues, but at least I can use the MTN software now and get into the company APN.

Would you try my program again please? I have just uploaded a new version that tells you which step of the initialization failed, this might provide some clue as to where things are going wrong.

Okay, I ran it and here is the message it gave:

Sent: "AT^HS=0,0"
Expected: "^HS:a,b,c,d,e"
Received: ""

And just as with the MTN software, when I replug the card it works fine.

Hmmm, that's the first step of initialization. Can you try again with DebugView running in the background? I suspect your card is just not responding at all and the applications are timing out.

Only thing I can think of is to look for a BIOS update for your laptop.

I'll run with DebugView in the background when I get my hands on the laptop again, and I'll try the BIOS update. I will let you know when I get it done.

The thing is it isn't my laptop, I am just helping someone out. The problem is ever since I got it semi-working, the guy is content with it. As soon as I get my hands on the laptop again I will try a BIOS update and run the e620 tool with DebugView and report back.
