Hi all,

I just got a second hand 3G/HSDPA card from a friend. Unfortunately the antenna cable is damaged, so it looks like I'll need another one. I'm currently getting 437kb/s, and I only get 2 or 3 bars on the vodafone client app. Will the antenna give it some more bars? How does one know? My cell phone shows all bars full for normal 3G, but I still only get 233kb/s on average.
ANy helps/hints/tricks to try boost the signal. I'm right on the outer edge of the coverage map, actually just fall out of the coverage area but I still get 3G. Maybe its just a weak signal and cant do anything about it :(
Ideas welcome

thanx

you could get a replacement antenna for approx R200, or look at a better, more expensive antenna from Poynting - 11dBA gain, specifically for 3G/HSPDA. That should make a significant difference. In the meantime, borrow a standard antenna and test...

I have just ordered my 11dB antenna from Poynting in Wynberg..Directional Yagi,10m of cable,pigtail..
Total cost under a grand.Bargain!!
Picking it up on Monday.

Just got a call from Annelise,I can collect tomorrow(Thursday)after 10 am..Good stuff.!

If you have crappy reception and you only see 1,maybe 2 bars on occasion with regular loss of connection,GET YOURSELF THIS ANTENNA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its Brilliant!!!!!!!! I put it up on my roof pionting in the general direction of the tower(Im officially out of a coverage area...)and Ive got a full FOUR bars signal!!!Never seen this before and all I did was get the Yagi antenna!!

Pyonting are in Wynberg,Jhb..Speak to Annelise Nel.

Dudleygb, don't worry about the fact you only get 2 to 3 bars cos that is generally a fairly good signal. Have a look at http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=61703 and check your signal strength before deciding to spend money trying to improve your signal and it may not be necessary. To get 4 or 5 bars, you almost need to camp outside the base station.

hi brad, yeah cool, I just saw that post. I'm using Linux and was wondering if any Linux Ubuntu buffs could assist on how to perform this test on Linux Ubuntu...thanks for the pointer
