HUAWEI E620/Laptop Hangs (Vodacom3G)?

Poor Service...sorry...NO SERVICE at Vodashop

As I explained before, I have a Dell Latitude D820....and my Huawei E620 just doesn't work! As advised, I took my Data Card to my local vodashop to get it swopped for a new one. AS I FEARED!!! They knew absolutely nothing about the arrangement. The manager at the Festival Mall Vodashop in Kempton Park just gave me a blank stare :confused: . And then I went :mad: Vodacom3g: What do I do know? Is there some sort of letter I can get to give to him or something????

I'm experiencing similar symptoms, but I've got a LG LW60. Could it be the same problem? SN E87NAE16611.., which looks like a June 2006 model. One difference though is that it started out fine, but within a month the problems started and the severity escalated. Original Vodafone Mobile Connect ver 7.00.0015. Reached point where PC hangs where datacard is inserted. Downloaded ver 7.03.0005, installed, uninstalled all Huawei drivers and re-installed everything. Worked like a dream.... for 2 hours, and then the nightmare started.

Any suggestions?

Heat maybe?

How close is the PCMCIA slot to the laptop's exhaust?
 
Same side, just the printer port splitting them. Must admit, it's exceptionally hot when ejected. Don't know if it's more than normal. What's too hot? Can measure it with a contact thermometer.

Any ideas on how to overcome this, if it's the problem? A desk fan is not as portable as the laptop. How things have changed!

Some of the laptop manufacturers don't seem to think about this. I've seen more than one card cooked to death this way.

Try the desktop fan (seriously!) and see if it helps. At least it will point in the right direction.

OK. The advice helped, but it did not solve the problem. My Laptop will hang the moment I insert the datacard, even when I've just switched it on. A repair will sometimes work to get it working again, but an uninstall-install will eventually be required after at least 5 times. I'm basically running a repair daily. It's extremely frustrating. The laptop updates try to install a TI FlashMedia driver, but when it reaches 25% it jumps to 100 and completes. A few days later it wants to install the same driver. I've searched for the specific driver to download it, but could not find the specific version. Could that be part of the problem?
 
I just purchased a second hand version of this card. Needless to say I wasn't aware of this little issue. Is this swap out still available or am I on my own?

I took a print out of the issue and replacement suggestion along to Vodacare and they swapped it for me. You may have to do some technical explaining though. The only problem is that they will give you a refurb as replacement and there is no guarantee that it will be a later revision. :rolleyes:

Make me wander if it isn't just better to find a way to upgrade the firmware myself.

It's not the firmware its the actual internals of the card. The later revisions have a different design.
 
Now this is a groovy outcome. Based on the fact that I got this self same card working on my Acer, I tried it on the Dell but running Linux. Surprise surprise, it works, no hitch, whatsoever. Pity its the work laptop :(

The problem with certain laptops have been identified as an issue with Huawei cards manufactured before 1st of October. See below on how to check if your card is one of the older batch.

If you have an older card AND you see the problem, you can have it swapped out at your local shop.

-New hardware can be identified by looking at the Serial number on the back of the data card.
-The series of numbers and letters include information about the date of manufacture.
-For example in the serial number E81AE106A0100027
-06 represents the year
-A represent the 10th month
-01 represents the day of the month

-Therefore if the 7th, 8th, 9th digits are 06A, 06B etc… it is new hardware

Can anyone work out its age? And could/should I swop it?
