I have a HG556a router that I want to use as a 3g mobile router. I can't seem to find any place where I can change APN settings when I login to 192.168.1.1

I don't know this one, but in other Huawei router you have to create new profile, save it, then activate.

This is what is available

Under wifi the only options available is to change wifi channel; ssid name and password. Under HSPA it just show the statistics. Under administration you can only change password.

I have read on internet about advanced settings,I dont even have such an option. Dont know if a software or firmware update will resolve but even if I can get an update how will I update it ?

According to the manual this router doesn't have built-in 3G modem. You can configure modem interface if you plug modem dongle in the USB socket located on the back (inside the pocket). See section 3.2 (picture) and 4.2 (interface settings).

It doesn't say which parameters can be configured. APN is stored in the modem. It means you can always configure APN when modem is plugged to PC, then move modem to the router, it will be remembered. You still need to configure interface as per section 4.2
EDIT: According to the Vodafone manual, you will be able to configure APN in above mentioned place.
