I haven’t tried to sign in on an uncertified handset so don’t know just how it’s currently implemented, have you?

I’d presume the fact they are now legally obliged to prevent it under Trumplestiltkin’s entity list order against Huawei will likely see it stepped up in how strictly it’s enforced.

Yes you'll probably get better battery life without it as well.

You’ll also get no banking apps, no NFC payments, apps with DRM that need Widevine are likely to have issues as Widevine is via Google TrustZone.

Its not as simple as finding replacements for gmail and YouTube...

Don't use any of that except the banking app that can be replaced by using your browser and internet banking anyway.

So you’re quite an abnormal user?

Most people want access to banking apps, Netflix etc and GooglePay will likely be in SA soon (and is really convenient to use).

I wouldn’t be as hesitant to spend the equivalent of €200-250 on a phone that may end up not compatible with Google services, but not €800-1000.

Though aren’t you a proponent of buying the cheapest Xiaomi or even cheaper China brands for your phone use?

There are so many apps for cameras and other tech gadgets that are only on playstore.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but that wraparound screen looks to be a bad idea. It cannot be protected properly in any case, so it's gonna break pretty easily. Otherwise, very nice.

It's the worst. I have one a Mate 20 Pro, same curves screen. Dropped it a couple times and its not got a scratch so not too worried about that, Huawei brand cases are great and really fit the phone/are well thought out.

The curve sucks becuse you touch it accidentally all the time and you will type "9" ten times before you hit "0" and "o" fifty times before you hit "p" ...its just nonsense. This is my first curved screen and I swear: never again.

Good for you and a bunch of fiddlers....for the vast majority of people this is going to be a big headache and therefore a phone to keep away from.

Samsung has this same issue,Huawei goes to copy this crap instead of avoiding it like Apple.

So Google has gone out of their way to prevent side loading of GMS and Google apps on the Mate 30.

Huawei's new Mate 30 phones reportedly lost their ability to install Google's Android apps, Bloomberg reported, eliminating a workaround for President Donald Trump's ban on the controversial Chinese company.

Security researcher John Wu outlined the process that let Huawei Mate 30 owners manually download and install major apps Google Maps and Gmail. This method, which used an app called LZPlay, apparently no longer works, and Bloomberg reported that only Google is able to make that kind of change.
