Huawei Mate 20 Pro : Camera

@Dolby
At the moment I am still trying to decide between P20 Pro vs S9+, or Mate 20 Pro vs Note 9 (I havent really made my mind up regarding which size of phone I want to get)

I think Tcyte has both the Mate20Pro/P20Pro - but I'll help where I can :

You'd think that the Mate20Pro is much larger than it is due to screen size, but for all intents and purposes they're 'the same' size phone. Yes - in real terms, the P20Pro/Mate20Pro are actually a few millimeters of each other and feel similar to hold. Physical size shouldn't be an issue when choosing between either Huawei and I'd go the Mate20Pro without doubt if I had the choice.

@DolbyI have read on XDA that there is a laundry list of issues with the Mate 20 Pro, like issues with the screen, fingerprint reader, facial recognition, and the guys cant stop bitching about the notifications. What are your thoughts? Would love a first hand opinion from a local.

Zero issue with the screen on my side - but I did read the same overseas reviews as you. There's something on MyBB with the guys that do know more (I think in the standanrd review of the Mate20Pro), but definitely nothing from my side.

Zero issues with the accuracy of the fingerprint reader but is slower than the standard sensors you find. I think one issue is that you have to apply pressure to activate (ie like a button and you need to press) whereas the traditional you lay your thumb on it and it reacts. But this brings me to my next point ...

... The facial recognition is fast - very fast. I have both the fingerprint and the facial recognition enables and my face opens the phone 9/10 times first. Even when I want to show off the under screen fingerprint, the camera has already picked up my face and opened the phone. I actually doubt that you'll use the sensor too much. One thing I would be concerned about is having tempered glass or a protection of some sort ... and what that'd do to the sensor ? Ie less accurate or slower? I'm unsure. But I can tell you that you'd never use it if you have the facial recognition on.

Notifications is an odd one as I did have a few issues but hadn't read anything - so I thought it was my settings or something arb. Do you have the link at all? MY issues was that at hte top of screen, I never got all the icons - so if I received a Whatsapp / Gmail / some other notification .... It wouldn't display. With the notch on, I thought it could be a space issue - but I turned it off and again, couldn't get icons to show.

Curious what the other guys picked up?

Pretty much the same thoughts on my side.

With regards to notifications, it's something that also happened on the Mate 20 Lite, the notch takes the space of notifications so I usually drag the notifications shade down to reveal everything there.

Thank you for the response.

Here is the link to the XDA forums where guys are having issues with the Mate 20 pro.

So I've lightly gone through this (will do so more in depth) ... but it seems many of the issues are launcher / Nova related - which I don't use. I don't use Bluetooth earphones (though, Bluetooth Spotify works like every other phone I've had with regards to volume).

Funny enough, that 5Ghz issue I have picked up - but not to that extent. 1 of 10 times it doesn't seem to see a 5Ghz SSID - but I'll keep an eye on this actually.

With regards to actual issues (ie not complains), I don't have what these guy do. Though, I'm on later firmware that most of them ?

Thanks for this. I am currently trying to decide between the S9+, note 9, and mate 20 pro. These 3 phones seem very similar in performance and usability, so I guess for me it comes down to the quirks and implementations of EMUI vs samsung's android skin, and build quality.

I really like how huawei has multiple biometric unlock options, (you can have both face and finger active at once) vs samsung where it's one or the other (iris rather than face). I don't like that their expandable storage option is some new format that I doubt will be easily or cheaply available. There are many pros and cons like that for each brand.

One little thing which may be a dealbreaker for me, and hopefully you can confirm this, is the way EMUI handles lockscreen notifications. I have a P8 lite and LG G4, and I notice that LG keeps notifications on the lockscreen as long as they are in your notification tray and until you swipe them away. If you unlock and don't touch any notification, they're still in your lockscreen the next time. Huawei dismisses them from your lockscreen after you unlock, and will only show you new notifications since you last unlocked. This bothers me since I listen to podcasts a lot and lockscreen controls for a 3rd party client are only constantly available on my LG. I can always pause straight from the lockscreen. On the P8 the controls do not stay on the lockscreen and so I have to unlcok the phone and either use the controls in the notification tray or open the app. This seems silly, but something I do a lot I don't want to have to put up with an annoyance. I use antennapod to listen to podcasts, so it may help if you try out that app for yourself.

I also wonder how long we would get updates on each of these, if anybody has any idea how long we in SA will get updates from the networks and not get left behind on an old version soon.
And does anyone know what storage/ram variants the networks will keep? They don't ever state in their adverts.

I know samsung uses gorilla glass 5, and huwaei doesn't say what it uses, likely an older version of gorilla glass.

Camera seems better on the huawei, but when it comes to straight pointing and shooting, I wonder if samsung will give you more consistent results. Huawei is probably better if you take the time to set up the shot. Just a guess from me on that, please let me know what you have experienced.

Sorry I missed this - let me snap a few photos of what it does.

Basically I use Always On (which doesn't show many notifications) - so it's showing the time continually ...
I get a WhatsApp ... it beeps and the LED flashes green ...
I unlock the phone but don't go into WhatsApp (ie notification is still up there)
When the phone locks, it returns to flashing a green LED

Check this video to see how it handles notifications?

All photos are above are totally default / auto settings - so only 10MP with auto exposure and everything. So, aside from me making sure they phone is very stable in my hand, they're pretty much point and shoot photos. Like I mentioned earlier that aside from IQ which may be pretty similar, I love the camera due to versatility. Having so many focal lengths available on a 9mm thick phone really makes shooting far easier. The added macro mode adds to this flexibility. Generally, I write off any type of digital zoom ... but this actually gives usable results. If you wanted to take a bird photo previously with a mobile, it was pointless unless you were under a metre away. With this, I can actually take a usable image.

Regarding the Gorilla Glass, you're right - unspecified. I've also tried trawling the net :(

Updates generally are up to the network. You'll see my other posts on my Mate 10 Pro which is behind on the updates - but it's just Vodacom. The GPU Turbo update, for example, still hasn't rolled out to Vodacom users (MTN, Telkom etc have it already - as well as most global users). But the two I have with me now :

P9 (2 years) -Android 7.0 with June 2018 security
Mate 10 Pro (1 year) Android 8.0 with October 2018 security

I complained about Vodacom on the issue in the news section and here. Now she've got one update on September, two! updates last month. Y6 2018, EMUI 8.0, current version is 148(C02) - updated this month, impressive.

It seems it came on the Huawei intervention.

Multiple problems with Google FoolPlay Services gone, but didn't have a time for monitoring data usage and investigate VoLTE and VoWiFi things.

Usually done with an SLR and a setup that can take a while to setup - I tried with a mobile phone in a water feature.

One problem I found with taking a shot like this is on auto, you get the really cool fast, consecutive shot - which helps capture the water drop. But the auto focus tends to screw things up, as you want manual. If you change to pro, you 'fix' the AF issue ... you lose the consecutive shot.

You can have fingerprint and face/iris detection on at the same time with the Samsungs. I have it on at the moment.

The S9+ has a good camera, you won't be disappointed. S9+ still uses microSD cards. Not that you really need it since you have 128 GB of internal storage.
