Huawei Mate 40/Mate 40 Pro

It's been released in a number of countries already, but mostly Asian.

I was reading one of the article that Huawei has been restricted to purchase some of the technical part from American Inc

No google playstore in those phones

Correct. Huawei have been working on their own alternatives, and there are some workarounds.

I'm assuming that SA is never going to get it... :(

Its available - takealot vodacom etc. I have the mate 20 pro and time for a new phone, but don't think I can take the plunge without GMS - mate 20 pro was an awesome phone no complaints. I hate that our options are always so limited in SA.

I went from Mate 20 Pro to Mate 40 Pro, a bit of extra setup, but so far so good.

Damn, I read your reviews on the other thread. So discovery/bank apps both work fine, can I get samsung health and sync it still? Other then that just like gmail etc, I can still access via the web? I already use youtube vanced as for some reason normal youtube wasn't using the actual resolution. So tempting - I might pull the tigger - its a lot of phone.

I downloaded Samsung Health from the Aurora Store, set up an account, and started a quick exercise session to check. It seems to work perfectly.

There is definitely a bit of extra work in setting things up - apps, MicroG, Gspace maybe, etc., but it's worth it for me.

Gmail imap via Huawei mail.

Got the EMUI12 update on Wednesday, still giving it a test run, so far very smooth and fast, what I am seeing is that the UI is still running on top of Android 10, but the latest EMUI12 FW brings the February 2022 security patches with it.

I am on a generic device, the network devices seem to have received EMUI12 much earlier so they may be on March 2022 security updates already.

Have to say overall EMUI12 has given the Mate 40 Pro a lot more life, I am finding this device so fast and smooth consistently, it also seems to have improved on battery life which is welcome given the Load Shedding going on, haven't actually killed this phone.

I keep it with 5G on (MTN) as I do have coverage in my apartment, all around, it only used to be in my loft but now I see I get it allover, boarding well for getting another 5G phone when I eventually upgrade my other Sim.
Resolution: High (2772x1344)
Refresh Rate: High (90Hz)

I will need to do a run where I keep an eye on Screen On Time as the Huawei battery meter only seems to count SOT for that specific day, from the current usage I believe I am averaging 6.5-7hours of SOT, but let me comeback with a definite figure once I have done a thorough run, as I keep boucning between it and my darkside phone.

Something I keep getting impressed by is the Dual Speakers on this device, they are pretty damn good, don't think Huawei is given enough credit on that, I've enjoyed watching YouTube videos with it a lot.

As I have said before I really like its squared off design and wide stance, I have not been a fan of most Androids going narrow, the Mate 40 Pro has done a great job at balancing narrowness (is that even a word!? Lol) and width.

My only gripe is still the curved screen/Waterfall screen, even with a case I tend to get a little put off sometimes at just how steep this is, I didn't mind it too much in the beginning but overtime it has got to me.

In terms of apps, I have all that I need, Huawei App Gallery has been good at giving most of the necessities along with Petal Search.

Camera continues to be an absolute wonder, I don't do it as much justice as a professional like Chris G or Dolby would, but it gets the job done great for me.

Hoping to see a Mate 50 Pro with a similar design but less curved screen, hint hint nudge nudge @Huawei .

Always been a mate person and I suspect the mate 50pro might just be a game changer of they give it to us this year because Huawei seems to be holding back with premium device releases particularly here in South Africa
