Huawei modem or Tytn II ?

Hi from the UK

I came across this forum and thought there might be someone who can help me. I have the Tytn II (aka Vario III from T-Mobile UK) with unlimited data tarif.

With the handset, speedwise so far I have never been able to reach anything above 800kbps at home, and 1.2Mbps at work, where we actually have 3.6Mbps enabled ! (I know that because I work for T-Mobile). This is far from the theoretical 1.8mbps, but I would be very happy if i saw constants speeds around 1.2-1.5...

As the Tytn is supposed to replace my home broadband, I am seriously considering to buy a Huawei E220 modem. Can anyone tell me if a modem would allow me to connect at faster speeds, or are there tweaks I can perform on the Tytn modem connection to increase my speeds (I run Vista) ?

in the UK, T-Mobile charges £12.50/month for 3GB and £22.50/month for 10GB for mobile broadband
(don't hate me for this, i get a 50% employee discount). the 10GB tariff includes VoIP

just did another speedtest via the tytn II connection, and i get around 500kbps :confused: and that's in the middle of our HQ, where the signal is pretty strong. no idea what's wrong with the settings...
 
Don't you have a E220 that you can loan?

I actually find my E220 slower than my old Nokia E90 (only good thing about he phone).

Damn...I'd love that sorta price for 10GB truly mobile

The thing with speed tests is that they can be very subjective. Vodacom introduced a speedtest on their backbone which is great for establishing whether your device is performing optimally or to see if there are issues with the Vodacom network. Which I suspect is what you are after.

I'm guessing the server your are using to test (you have not said which) is sitting outside the T-Mobile network, thus you are subjected to the backhaul constraints (not that the UK is subjected to the Telkom problems we have here). Not sittting in the UK and knowing the infrastructure it is difficult to comment on what you should be seeing in terms of speed. What you really need is a second device and preferably comparisons to other providers. Don't any of your friends and work colleagues have 3G devices / capable phones? My impression of 3G implementations overseas is that while the backhaul is ample the deployment is not that widespread (corrections welcome). So you might just be too many people on one tower.

Ok you are definitely right, I should have given more info.

I've tried around 6 different speed tests (servers located in the UK, Europe, America etc, using both Mozilla Firefox and IE), always with results around 500-800 kbps. A colleague in the same team in the office gets 1.2Mbps with a HSDPA enabled N95.

I have asked one of our testing teams for a Huwaei modem, with which I'll try out the speed where I work. It is probably going to be quite a bit faster than the Tytn, but the thing is, I already have a Tytn II and don't t really fancy spending more money on a USB modem. I am hoping to be able to get some advice on what I can change in the settings (either on the PC side or the mobile) to get the speed up to acceptable levels.

...so does anyone have any ideas what I can tweak on the Tytn or the PC side (Vista modem settings) to increase the speed ? I'm still waiting for the test USB modem to see by how much the speed actually increases as opposed to using the handset as a modem.
 
Not sure, I'm pondering getting a Tytn II this weekend, or a Shift next year. Maybe then I can help.

How do you connect the phone to the PC? Cable/Bluetooth/Wireless?
