My phone has unbranded firmware.
Why?Ah....that would explain it then. See, even if I put my sim into your phone then, it still would not work if you turn it on.
Why?
Because the firmware must contain the settings for these functions for each network. So even though the function is available in your phone's unbranded firmware, it wont work with a Vodacom sim because the firmware does not have the specific settings for Vodacom Volte and Vowifi to connect.
Ah, I see. Gateway IP addresses and the like?
I assume so, though I am not exactly sure how it works, but yes, I am assuming some kind of IMS server address or something to that effect must be set up in the firmware for these services to connect.
I would have thought there would be some sort of info embedded in the sim? Would make more sense than putting it in firmware.
I agree. I dont think however that the sim architecture supports that kind of info to be stored as the current sims were designed way before Volte and Vowifi became a thing.
Sims are just data storage mechanisms. SIMS have been evolving, from 8k up to 64k now. So maybe, all that's needed is a new sim with vowifi/volte bits in it?
Yip.....but then I am sure a firmware update would still have to be done anyway to tell the OS to pull the information for the IMS server/gateway that it must connect to from the sim.
I've already asked about it, and the standard response is to call the app customer care.Drop [email protected] an email and ask for their advice?
I didn't bother phoning. What's the point of having a Twitter or Facebook account if you're just going to direct people to calling the helpline anyway?
I turned it on for Telkom to test. As soon as I call 4G change to 3G, which is hopefully just coverage related.Because the firmware must contain the settings for these functions for each network. No option on MTN (Sim2).
Thank you! Had to stalk you on Twitter to read the link though

I tried in several locations today and this will explain my lack of success. To my knowledge Telkom does not support Volte and Vowifi at all. It wont work at all on Telkom regardless of coverage.
