Hi Everyone

So the new Huawei P30 series phones have been released. Obviously the camera is the main selling point. Early picture samples seems to show that the P30 Pro has extended its lead at the top of the mobile phone photography ladder. Improved Night mode; Improved Zoom capabilities; Quick Charge 40w; Two-way wireless charging; and optical fingerprint sensor are among the key improvements.

Question: How does these improvements stack up against the new Samsung S10 in the Android boxing ring? Further, can you build a case to choose Huawei P30 Pro over Samsung S10 and vice versa?

P20 Pro Owner

Having played with a P30 pro and seen the camera and what it's capable of, together with the rest of the package, I wouldn't even look at a samsung.

Samsung may compete with P20 (according to specs), but not this one.

Specs aside, implementation of DSP processing on Huawei is far more superior when comparing one by one with Samsung or Apple. All reviewers agree with this. It is also seen on lower-spec models, like Y7 2019.

So is the deal breaker the camera? What about the other features?

4200mAh battery. 40 watt charging, 15 watt wireless charge, reverse wireless charge, dual 4g?

So what about Samsung's 4K HDR10+ video support; 4K video recording @60fps; 5G support; One UI; headphone jack; stereo speakers; auto HDR selfie cam........

What's important to you, is the question I guess you need to answer to yourself and make your decisions based on that

Lol I'm playing devil's advocate.
I hear you. You have valid points, I was dead serious with my response.

For my needs the 30 Pro meets then perfectly. If your needs are hypothetically for 60fps 4k video and a headphone jack, then the s10 plus is probably what you want at this performance range?

Don't get me wrong...I'm still happy with my P20 Pro. Camerawise Huawei is in a league of its own. The only area where Huawei comes a distant second to both Samsung and Apple is the Software. Huawei still playing catchup in that department. The one thing I hate about Samsung though is the bloatware that comes with the phone which use a lot of storage and RAM.

Here is my review on the device: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/huawei-p30-pro-review.1016418/

Along with some comparisons:
https://youtu.be/oYJiVwQ4ghY

The best thing to do after all this is to go into a phone shop and see which you like best in the hand, as ultimately, that's what it will come down to. You simply cannot go wrong with any current flagship, but you can find the correct one for you, the one that fits all that you see as important best.

If battery life, camera and UI speed are incredibly important to you, the P30 Pro is a no brainer, EMUI stays incredibly fast and smooth, and there's even Performance Mode if you really want to kick it up a bit.

Nice work on the review, thanks for sharing. I agree with you partly that comparing the phones in-hand is the best way to decide on a phone. Personally, most tech I've bought over the years was based on checking reviews from multiple sources. The design language of phones have been quite similar the last few years with software being the major differentiator i.e. On paper Sony is supposed to have the best smart phone camera, but their software engineers are still using Windows XP it seems lol.

For me, although I like Huawei which has some things it does better than anyone else. But Samsung still appears to be the better all-rounder in terms of overall package (Sound; software; and hardware)

The Mate series will always be better than the Pseries because Huawei use it to introduce their new chipsets etc. I've always been a Pseries fan though since owning the P9.

What's your favourite device Tsepz?

Absolutely agreed. A good balance of reviews and real world testing will be the best informed decision.

In terms of favourite devices, the Huawei Mate X is currently my favourite, THAT is where I see smartphones going in the future. I currently use both my Smartphone and iPad, but the Mate X combines both Phone and Tablet in one well sized device. Everything else right now is just building up to Foldables.

The perfect device for me would be a Mate X, with a Pen and the P30 Pro's Camera, all in 1.

I don't think it is true. In your previous post you have mentioned 4K video. I would rather prefer a top quality image stabilization at a lower resolution (that P30 Pro has) to the potentially unstable implementation on the border of the current processing power capability. I also disagree with the statement of inferior software, it is simply not true.

Regarding implementation of the sound, it doesn't have 3.5mm jack and you don't like blocking USB Type-C connector for your audio headset, I understand. However I would like to take your attention what I found during evaluating Y7 2019, see post #9: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/huawei-y7-2019.1011372/post-23061306

It is something exciting in Bluetooth HiRes audio development out of there. Huawei is spending lot of money on developing HWA/LHDC codec and a certification programme. LHDC is a first royalty-free HiRes codec for Bluetooth. Because it is free, I expect there will be soon many LHDC devices on the market.

Flagship phone + flagship price do not sit well for me in terms of "good image stabilization at a lower resolution". Samsung has shown that it is very good at both photography and especially video recording (Stable quality 4K recording). In regards to software, i suggest operating both phones for an extended period of time to understand what i'm referring to. EMUI has improved a lot in the last 2-3 years, but Samsung's One UI is more refined and especially user friendly.
Thanks for sharing the link to the review, much appreciated. Its great to see Huawei futureproof their phones in some capacity. Soundwise, audio via bluetooth has also improved in a major way and still are. Despite this, it still lags behind using cable. My suggestion is to check this on a Flagship LG device which has a builtin DAC. If possible, try using high end heaphones/studio monitors.

Huawei spent lot of money for what they think is a future proof and will spend much more cash for managing certification process. They give away codec for free. So far nobody did the same (Qualcomm and Sony). It has something to do with "pay it forward" concept, it is why they receive my appreciation.

LG went traditional way, but it is not a future proof. There is a lot of harmful noise inside the phone, so it is extremely difficult to keep analog traces free of radiation. It also affect SAR figure. When you wear a wired handsfree, your radiation exposure can be increased dramatically.

All cellphones do have ADC/DAC chips inside, but a typical quality is poor. It is good to have 3.5mm jack, but it doesn't make much sense with a poor DAC. I have an analog jack on Y6 and Y7, but I am listening to music over Bluetooth aptX, Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC on the end. These headphones don't satisfy audiophile requirements, but a type of distortions over Bluetooth are less fatiguing over long period of listening. When on the move, Bluetooth is fine for me. While home, I would rather listen to music on speakers, not a headphones. And a good external DAC+amp is mandatory.

BTW, you do actually have analog audio output on P30 Pro. It is on the USB Type-C connector side. You need a passive converter, it is just extra pins carrying analog audio output.

Why does everyone bring up the HDR10+ support ?

1. There's a handful (literally) of titles that support the format
2. They're on Amazon Prime
3. You're really going to pressed to pick up an HDR10+ stream

4K is another one - I've had it on a smartphone since 2014. Do you know how many 4K videos's I've actually got ?

It seems the metrics of the Samsung brigade or very wild and varied ; or more realistically, as they cannot compare on the real metrics, they resort to any weird and wonderful things they can find

I agree with you. But you only looking at it from a video watching perspective and watching 4K videos on a phone screen is senseless because you wont be able to spot the difference with for example 1080p. Personally i chose the P20pro over Samsung because i hardly watch videos longer than 5 minutes on my phone. However, If you are someone who does a lot of vlogging, advanced video recording capabilities become a no brainer if you going to post it on the internet or watch it at home on a 4K capable tv. In SA unfortunately, vlogging is still in its infancy due to poor infrastructure and high data prices.
