Huawei SA is still going strong despite dropping Google services

PR spin.

Local shops, the staff are complaining about the amount of flack they are getting. The gov app isn't on Hauwei either, why is that and was that mentioned in the article?

And now with OPPO and hopefully more entering SA, Huawei will take a knock, rightfully so.

Yes my daughter bout a new Huawei phone and is getting by fine with it. But we really need a universal Android app store that is independent of Google, Huawei and any OEM. I should be able to buy an app once and use it across any of my phones, or for any country. Otherwise we're going to see more and more fragmentation, and we're going to get tugged between USA, China, Russia, and whatever comes next.

Yes we have F-Droid but its open source only, and there is Aurora Store and others which will allow purchases. But we also don't want devs having to publish to 12 different stores. It's a serious problem having the Android Play Store tied to Google in the USA where it can be politically controlled to exclude apps, exclude access to its use in certain countries to the detriment of all non-US citizens of the world.

Next thing is Windows updates won't be allowed on Huawei laptops... do we see where this is going? I seriously hope an independent Android app store rises to rule them all.

God, that was hard to read...

I’m rather sure there are quite a few people have bought the phones and received a nasty surprise.

More likely they have no idea. I know people who have Android phones and download apps and insist they don't have a Gmail account.

I personally know of two people who bought phones sans google and are looking to replace them.

Bought a tablet for my daughter and really forgot about the no Google services, had to return it a few days later as she couldn't use the youtube alternative app.

I'm just waiting for them to launch Harmony and hopefully cheaper phones to entice.

There is no way Huawei is doing fine without Google services. I've even heard older folks say that newer Huawei phones don't include Google Maps, YouTube, Gmail etc. and seen a few FB posts warning friends off of Huawei because of the nonsense they just discovered with their new phone.

Aside from a few tinfoil hat folks, I think almost no one is okay with not having the core Google apps.

Lol most younger people in SA knows how to sideload. The MyBB interview goes into more details.

Exactly. You can't run an Android OS without Android services.

It's like saying you can use an iPhone, but it has no access to Apple services. It's pointless.

Kak, if Microsoft, Nokia and blackberry couldn't take on android and ios then neither can Huawei.

No android is a death sentence for their phones outside of China.
They have a big enough market in China for it to work. Plus the Chinese are patriotic. If they can offer juice inducements I'm sure they can build up an app store to make it worthwhile even outside of China. Their software will probably take time to mature. Until then they'll continue to bleed. No one but bsb and a few loyalists are likely to be okay with not having their banking apps on the phones and having to side load other services. That's asking for trouble for the average guy and it is a cumbersome process to keep **** up to date.
