So I have this phone on my radar but thought i should confirm in here from those in the know. Should I be worried about google playstore? any potential issues I should be aware of software wise down the road?

If it has they pay store currently then no. Only newly launched devices are a problem.

its a 2019 phone hence my worries - I guess Xiaomi is the way to go
